Castle Howard

Castle Howard is one of this country’s finest historic houses. Construction of the house began in 1699 and took over a hundred years to complete. It was Charles Howard, the 3rd Earl of Carlisle (1669-1738), who commissioned Sir John Vanbrugh to design the house. Perhaps one of its most sticking features is the central dome, the type of which had never been seen to crown a private dwelling in England before. The house is still the home of the Howard family and contains many fine treasures. The house and gardens are open to the public. The notes accompanying each photograph are from a series of lectures first given to the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society by Mr. George Hepworth around 1916.
