Description
An account of the resource
The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. Description
An account of the resource
With the building of steam factories and the continual improvement in machines, there was a need for supportive trades to maintain production of yarn or cloth. From 1823, Lawrence Wilson had produced bobbins and spindles, his firm starting in a small way, eventually expanded to become the largest bobbin producer in the world.Similarly, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Fieldens of Inchfield produced pickers, as did Waltons of Stoneswood Mill. Crossley Greenwoods were shuttle makers, Coupes & Whittaker were sizers. All these firms helped to maintain the spinning and weaving establishments.

Description
An account of the resource
Between Bridge Lanes and Heptonstall Road was a busy community, home to so many, yet passed by thousands each year as they travel up or down this busy road and see only a grassy slope with trees and bushes.
This thriving part of Hebden Bridge contained almost as many shops and business as any small town. The facts are these, situated in Bridge Lanes were eleven shops, one painter and decorating business, plumber's workshop, a small house used for worship, an electricians workspace and shop, two clothing manufacturers, an undertaker, two lodging houses (men only), a bottling plant that produced locally made lemonade, large upholstery firm, a pub, and last but not least gentlemen and a ladies conveniences at the bottom and a gents only toilet situated next to the telephone box at the top.
