Horse Drawn Ambulance, Hebden Bridge, 1896 - ALC08288
Ambulance, horses, Macpelah, Hebden Bridge
Horse Drawn Ambulance in front of Macpelah Works, at the junction of A646 and Station Road, Hebden Bridge.
From the 1897 Todmorden and Hebden Bridge Historical Almanack -
p57 "The first of February 1896, will long be remembered by the residents of Hebden Bridge, the occasion being the reception and formal presentation of an ambulance carriage to the town by Councillor Josiah Wade, of Halifax - a native of Hebden Bridge. Mr. Wade is well-known both in his native town and the town of his adoption as a large-hearted and generous man. The carriage is fitted-up with the most modern appliances, and capable of carrying two persons at a time. A procession of the local lodges of Odd-fellows and Foresters, fire brigade, ambulance carriage and ambulance men, and Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall brass bands, was formed at the station, and proceeded by way of Machpelah, Commercial-street, Bridge-gate, and Market-street to the top of Bridge-lanes. On returning a meeting was held in front of the White Lion Hotel, where Mr Wade presented the carriage to Mr. H. Clayton, the secretary, and Mr J. Haigh, the treasurer of the demonstration committee. In the evening a meeting was held in the Co-operative Hall, when the ambulance carriage was handed over to the District Council in the presence of a large assembly."

Eat More Fruit and Keep Fit. 1925 - ALC05009
Buildings, Cart, Hebden Bridge, Holme House, Holme Street, Horse, Street Names
The message of Eat More Fruit and Keep Fit was certainly better than another fad of the 1920s, which advised people to actively smoke instead of eating, as it was though to help some physical problems. Many began using them as an appetite suppressant in a bid to aid weight loss. In 1925 the Lucky Strike cigarette brand even launched the ‘Reach for a Lucky instead of a sweet’ campaign.

A Local Carter and his Team - MOT00127
Horse & Cart, People at Work
A local carter and his team hauling a load towards the upland; this often required the assistance of one or more chain horses, as illustrated here.
With the use of water power, the output of cloth increased. This increase in trade saw the opening up of the valleys and the construnction of Turn Pike Roads, with their toll bars, which made journey times shorter. The toll board at Steanor Bottom is evidence of the type and variety of vehicle using the roads, circa 1769.
The opening of the Rochdale - Sowerby Bridge Canal (1798-1802) for the conveyance of goods, virtually eliminated the use of the packhorse roads, except for local use. Even the Turn Pike Trust experienced a drop in revenue. Goods could be transported in greater quantities, and more quickly by canal barge than by road. Hardly had the canal revealed its advantages over road transport, than the railway appeared. In this area one of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th Century can be seen in the Summit Tunnel. In its day, 1841, it was the longest tunnel in Europe. The Tait prints provide an excellent record of the building of the line from Manchester to Normanton.
