Historic Homes of Yorkshire collection
Description
An account of the resource
This Album contains images with notes on the Historic Homes of Yorkshire, a series of lectures first given to the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society by Mr. George Hepworth around 1916. An architect by profession, in 1894 he was a founder member of the Brighouse Photographic Society, and became a much sort after photographic artist and lanternist (someone who operates a magic lantern). He achieved wide popularity with his book 'Brighouse, its Scenery and Antiquities'; as only a 100 copies were published it has become something of a collectors item. The lectures take the form of a guided tour of the properties, and the language of the original notes has been maintained.

See Exhibit

Description
An account of the resource
Slide 9 - The gardens at Farnley Hall are very beautiful especially in spring-time, at which time the accompanying photograph was taken. The tall tree on the left is a weeping lime, which I was informed by the head gardener is the finest and best specimen of its class to be found in Yorkshire.

Farnley Hall, the Terrace Front - HLS05794
Subject
The topic of the resource
Architecture, Ballustrade, Buildings, Chimney, Chimneys, Gables, Hall, Mullions, porch
Description
An account of the resource
Slide 3 - Taking our stand on the gravelled terrace in front of the Hall, we cannot fail to admire the appearance of this fine Elizabethan mansion.
The Hall consists of two houses, the old and the new. The view shows the older or Elizabethan portion, which dates from 1581. The newer part of the House was built at the end of the 18th century, by Mr Hawksworth Fawkes, under the direction of John Carr of York, Architect, but its rectangular uniformity makes it deficient in interest.
This old manor hall of Farnley has been associated with the name Fawkes uninterruptedly for nearly seven centuries, and still (1916) remains in that name in the person of Frederick Hawksworth Fawkes, Esq. the present owner.
