Description
An account of the resource
Possibly the oldest picture in the Pennine Horizons Archive.
Whit Monday 1856 with 3000 Sunday School scholars and teachers with banners, gathered in The Croft, or more correctly the White Horse Croft. Seen here looking over to the rear of buildings on Bridge Gate with Bridge Mill chimney and the Buttress climbing up top right, with Hangingroyd Farm towards the top of the picture. To the left of Bridge Mill chimney is Hartley, Brass & Iron Foundry on Bridge Gate. By the time this photo was taken the Croft was up for sale in plots one of which was purchased by the Baptists for Hope Chapel.

Description
An account of the resource
The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. Description
An account of the resource
Children of Roomfield Baptist Sunday School waiting to join the annual Band of Hope procession, at Anchor Street, Halifax Road.
In the late 19th Century every Chapel and Sunday School had its library, Mutual Improvement Society, Debating Society, lectures and Musical Events. All social events and outings centred round the Sunday School.
In the early 20th Century the Chapel and Sunday School still held the loyalty of their members, but improved transport (waggonettes and charabancs) and improved financial circumstances, gave opportunities to travel out of town and take part in Male Voice Choir Competitions,
Brass Band Contests and Musical Festivals.
The years between the wars saw a decline in chapel attendance. People were widening their interests. Skating Rinks, cinemas, the Variety Theatre were new interests.
Men had time to join societies and clubs, Floral, Pigeon, Bowling clubs, usually meeting in the local pub. There they could socialise, deal with club business and arrange their annual dinner or annual club outing.
Older women usually maintained links with the Sunday School and organised Fetes and Bazaars of 1 to 3 days duration, whilst the young girls would visit the cinema and walk up and down the "Monkey Run" in search of romance.
