On the left is the wall of the Hole in the Wall pub, over the bridge is Bridge Gate. In the centre is the Co-op building but this view cannot be seen today as as a new building has been constructed in the gap on Crown Street.
This part of Waterside Mill was handed over to the town to provide technical education in local trades and industries This building was superseded by Calder College in 1955.
Looking across St Georges Bridge, built 1893, to the Square and the large Co-op building with its clock tower. The building on the right on Blackwater Street was demolished to make way for the Council Offices which were built in 1897.

The church opened Good Friday 1859 with the lower part used as a school for mill workers. The church has closed and the building converted into dwellings.
