Slide 7 - Perhaps the most notable apartment in the Hall, is that known as the 'Dragon Room' which dates from the period between the middle of the reigns of Henry the Seventh and Henry the Eighth, say about the year 1520. The ceiling of the room which is studded with small dragons, lions, greyhounds as well as other devices, has been left untouched in its essential details since this part of the house was built. In the same apartment is to be seen the bed on which Fairfax slept on his way to Marston Moor, in 1644.

The Bedroom, Shibden Hall - HLS06034
Architecture, Buildings, Four poster bed, Hall, Interior, Panelling, Shibden Hall
Slide 5 - A fine oak staircase leads from the 'House Body' to the apartments on the upper floor. Ascending the staircase we are shown in one of the rooms on the upper storey, a massive carved oak four poster bed, dating from the time of Queen Elizabeth, also an old oak chest at the foot of the same.
A fireplace in this room dates from the time when the building was erected in the time of the Otes family, the first recorded owners of Shibden, about 1450. They were succeeded by the Saviles. The next family of note were the Waterhouses.
After the Waterhouses came the Crowthers and Hemingways who were followed in 1613 by the Listers, in whose hands it has continued up to quite recently, and has now been given to the Halifax Corporation.

Slide 5 - In one of the Bedrooms is a fine four post bedstead carved and draped in the orthodox fashion of bygone days. It is called the 'Duke of York's bed', but for what reason, and on what special occasion it was so named, I am unable to say.

Slide 21 - The State, or King James's State Room, is another fine apartment, the walls of which are wainscoted in oak, formed into large panels with enriched arches and borders, and pilasters between. The ceiling is divided up into a graceful geometric design and forms an effective finish to the room.
