Railway Accident at Cornholme 1967 - TAS001144
Subject

Accident, Crane, Cranes, Event, Goods Wagons, Mill, Railway, Railways, Todmorden
Description
An account of the resource
During the night of 15 August a train of 36 loaded vans and empty mineral wagons from Lostock Hall to Healey Mills headed by a Type 4 disel D398 collided with the 'Copy Pit' banker*, an 8F 2-8-0 steam loco, at about 60-70 mph. The driver of the diesel was killed and wreckage was strewn over a mile with some wagons rolling down the embankment including into houses in Cornholme. (Information thanks to 'Railway Memories No. 11, Halifax and the Calder Valley' published by Bellcode Books.)
* Banking was the use on a steep gradient of a powerful loco at the rear of a heavy train to help ‘push it up’ and also to stop any wagons that broke away from rolling back down hill, not unknown in the Upper Calder Valley.

Description
An account of the resource
The first station at Penistone on the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway’s (later Great Central) Sheffield – Manchester Woodhead line opened in 1845. When the L&YR line from Huddersfield to Penistone opened in 1850 it joined the Woodhead line at a junction east of the station with the result that L&YR trains had to reverse into the station. This persisted until 1874 when a new joint station was built with GCR and L&YR having their own platforms.
Penistone was also the terminus for trains from Doncaster via Barnsley connecting to the Woodhead line.
The GCR platforms closed in 1970 together with the Woodhead line to passenger and the line closed fully in 1981 and the tracks were subsequently lifted. The two remaining platforms for the Huddersfield – Sheffield line now sport just simple shelters for passengers.
The end of the GCR platforms are seen here in this image with GCR locos and carriages and in the background the Yorkshire Iron & Steel Works.
Any further details on the image will be gratefully received.

Description
An account of the resource
Serving the villages of Shepley and Shelley it opened, like other intermediate stations, with the line in 1850. Only one platform is seen here as its staggered platforms were separated by a road overbridge to the right of the photo. The station survived the Beeching cuts of the 1960s but was de-staffed in 1966 and the buildings subsequently demolished. In 1989 the line was largely reduced to single track but remains double track through the station here. It has been renamed ‘Shelley’.

Description
An account of the resource
The station, south of the impressive Lockwood Viaduct, opened at the same time as the line in 1850. A small goods yard can just be made out on the far side of the road bridge.
Unusual features of the station were two stone carvings of trains exiting tunnels, the first dated from the 1860s and the second from the 1880s. These can be seen here to the right of the platform canopy. (See DNT00294.)
The station closed in 1966 and in 1989 a new station was opened 330 yards south of the original. By that time the line had been reduced to single track and the new single platform station offers only a basic shelter.

Description
An account of the resource
One of several stations in the civil parish of Saddleworth which, although on the western slopes of the South Pennines, was in the West Riding of Yorkshire up until local government re-organisation in 1974 when it passed to Greater Manchester.
The branch to Delph left the Huddersfield – Manchester line south of Saddleworth Station. It had opened in 1851 and was closed in 1955 to passenger traffic but it continued to handle freight until 1963. The station building was converted into a private house.
Seen here at an unknown date but seemingly prior to withdrawal of passenger traffic in 1955 with a rake of goods wagons on a siding to the front of the passenger platform.

Description
An account of the resource
One of several stations in the civil parish of Saddleworth which, although on the western slopes of the South Pennines, was in the West Riding of Yorkshire up until local government re-organisation in 1974 when it passed to Greater Manchester. It is the only one of those stations to have survived the Beeching axe in 1968.
The station, seen here in 1954 looking in the Huddersfield direction, opened with the line in 1849. It was unaffected by the widening of the line in the mid-1890s as there wasn’t enough room alongside the existing double tracks and instead a loop line, the Micklehurst Loop, was built by the LNWR between Diggle and Stalybridge with its own intermediate stations.
As mentioned the station survived the Beeching axe but lost its buildings and passenger facilities until a new ticket office, waiting areas, toilets were opened in Spring 2009 with step-free access to the Manchester-bound platform but the Huddersfield-bound one can only be reached by a footbridge.

Description
An account of the resource
One of several stations in the civil parish of Saddleworth which, although on the western slopes of the South Pennines, was in the West Riding of Yorkshire up until local government re-organisation in 1974 when it passed to Greater Manchester.
The station had opened with the line in 1849 at the western end of the 3 miles 57 yards (4880 metres) Standedge Tunnels, a canal tunnel and a single bore railway tunnel at the time. The station was enlarged in the mid-1890s when the line was increased from two to four tracks. It is seen here in BR days and in the background are the western portals of the two single bore railway tunnels, the Nicholson Tunnel (1848) on the left and the Nelson Tunnel (1871) on the right, the 1894 double bore tunnel is hidden from sight by the steam hauled train at the station.
Seen here at an unknown date between nationalisation in 1948 and the line reverting to double track in the mid1960s. On the right a rake of goods wagons in a siding. The station was closed in 1968; there have been unsuccessful campaigns to have it re-opened.

Description
An account of the resource
Slaithwaite Station like other stations on the LNWR’s Huddersfield Manchester line along the Colne Valley opened with the line in 1849; it was enlarged in the mid-1890s when the line was increased from two to four tracks. It is seen here with well maintained platforms at an unknown date, but probably pre-1948 Nationalisation, or even earlier. The LNWR’s ringed semaphore signal on the slow lines does not appear on 1960s photos nor does the foot/barrow crossing but those later photos do show a standard semaphore signal at the end of the island platform. A steam locomotive is just discernible through the haze approaching the fast lines platforms.
The line reverted to double track in the mid-1960s and the station was closed under the Beeching axe in 1968 and the station buildings subsequently demolished and the platforms lifted. A new station was built on the site opening in 1982 with two platforms and bus stop style shelters.

The first station at Elland opened in October 1840 at the same time as the section of the M&LR between Hebden Bridge and Normanton and was immediately to the east of Elland Tunnel. It was rebuilt a little to the east in 1865 and then again in 1894 as an island station as seen here in LMS days. It was closed in 1962. It had been hoped that a station would have been reopened in 2000 when passenger services were reintroduced on this section of the line.
