Description
An account of the resource
By the mid-1860s Halifax Station was considered particularly inconvenient for goods traffic causing delays to the ever necessary delivery of coal and to relieve this bottleneck it was proposed removing mineral and general goods to a station at North Bridge to be operated, as with Halifax Station, jointly by the GNR and L&YR. Goods traffic commenced in 1874. The Goods Station closed in 1960 but the yard and coal depot hung on until 1974 a hundred years after opening.

Halifax Station Approach Road early 20th Century - DNT00236
Subject

GNR, Great Northern Railway, Halifax, Halifax Station, LYR, Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, Railway, Railways
Description
An account of the resource
The high level access road built in the mid-1880s when platforms and lines were constructed to the front of the original 1855 Italian style station building here on the right.
The station was operated jointly by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway (L&YR) and the Great Northern Railway (GNR) and their respective Booking Offices are clearly visible here. From the L&YR office passengers crossed a footbridge, as today, to three platforms at the rear, now reduced to two, and from the GNR office they went down steps to three platforms, demolished in the 1970, to the front of the station building.

GNR, Great Northern Railway, Halifax, Halifax Station, LYR, Railway, Railways, Station Approach
Description
An account of the resource
The arrival of the Prince of Wales for the opening of the Town Hall in August 1863. A rare image of the 1855 station with the original curving carriage drive from opposite the bottom of Horton Strret to a central portico. When the station was enlarged in the mid-1880s with platforms and sidings constructed to its front the carriage drive was taken up and replaced by the high level approach road we see today.
Print from The Illustrated London News, 15th August 1863.
The building has now been restored to its former glory, the magnificent facade again visible, but now used in connection with the Eureka Children's Museum.

Description
An account of the resource
On the ‘short line’ between Bradford & Leeds, built by the Leeds Bradford & Halifax Junction Railway, which opened in 1854 and was operated from the start by the Great Northern Railway who subsequently acquired it. The station opened with the line 1854 and was closed in 1966. It was a junction station as Leeds traffic from Halifax and the west avoiding Bradford on the Bowling curve joined the Bradford- Leeds line here and also just east of the station the Bradford-Wakefield Westgate line branched off, both those lines now long closed.

An account of the resource
LYRS 4266 - 1930. General view of station platforms and canopies and the unusual signal box looking south with the goods yard beyond. The station opened for goods traffic in 1874 when the line to Holmfield was constructed and for passengers in 1880 and closed to them in 1955 when the Queensbury lines closed; the station buildings were demolished in 1960. It remained open for goods until 1964 and continued as a coal yard until 1974. There is no evidence of the station left today, only North Bridge itself remains.
