In the 1980s much of the industrial heritage of the South Pennine area was being changed or in some cases lost. Pennine Heritage commissioned a survey of the condition of mills in the area. Photographs were taken when the survey was carried out, and the survey results have been added to those images in this collection.

Description
An account of the resource
NAME: MOOR BROOK MILLS
LOCATION: Holmfirth Road, New Mill
REF: HU 38
GRID REF: 162 088
CLASSIFICATION: B and C
CONDITION: Fully used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid – late 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Formerly known as New Mill Mills, the oldest part of this site is a three and four storey, single gabled stone building (date stone 1838). Some later additions. Adjacent is a larger, late 19C four storey building with small tower – possibly upper stories been removed. Large weaving sheds of varying dates and modern industrial buildings stretch out towards Glendale Mill (see HV 35). Octagonal stone chimney (capped) is still in use. This was probably a water powered site originally, and the long mill race has disappeared under the later extensions to the site. Became known as Moorbrook Mills after being taken over by Moorhouses and Brooks in 1912.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: This mill is still engaged in textile manufacturing and is quite a large industrial site. It is still owned by a local family firm.

Description
An account of the resource
NAME: WILDSPUR MILL
LOCATION: Near New Mill
REF: HU 34
GRID REF: 162 082
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Semi used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid 19C (site earlier?)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Just downstream from Valley Mills there was probably an earlier water-powered mill here. The present buildings date from the 1850’s – two large, four storey stone buildings of slightly different design, the lower being double gabled and probably slightly later in date. Tall, octagonal stone chimney still used. Small weaving shed and larger building that was probably built for the dyeing and finishing processes which were introduced here in the late 19C. Large dam still in good condition, and cottages on main road above.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is used by a firm of cotton dyers, although not all the buildings appear to be completely in use. Buildings look in good condition and, with their attractive setting in this wooded valley, could be designated as a Listed Building.
