Description
An account of the resource
The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition.
Viewed from Dobroyd Road in 1866, a year after the station was enlarged. The warehouses in the foreground are served by a branch line developed and used by Fielden Bros. Ltd for cotton goods. This shows the goods yard before it was extended in 1881 with the construction of the 'Great Wall'. In the bottom left is Dobroyd Crossing on the private carriage drive from John Fielden junior's Dobroyd Castle down to the family's Waterside Mill and the town.

Description
An account of the resource
Three hundred years ago, most of the population would be found in the farms and cottages on the upland "shelf", in areas such as Shore, Mankinholes and Bottomley. Families were self-sufficient, growing and producing most of their own food and clothing.
Gradually, the merchant clothiers, the entrepreneurs of the 17th - 18th century emerged. The domestic system with its "putting-out" system became the norm. Hand loom weavers working at home would take their woven pieces to the clothier at the "takkin' in shop". In return he would furnish them with more wool to be taken home and spun and woven. The clothier would visit the cloth or piece hall to sell the woven pieces and to buy wool. A view of Ratcher and Haugh Stones, above Holebottom.
The three-storey Ratcher cottage on the right is a typical example of the building constructed specifically for a cottage industry. It was later used as a bobbin factory for Lawrence Wilson from 1823.

Hebden Bridge Local History Society
Description
An account of the resource
The Hebden Bridge Local History Society was formed in 1949 and is a section of the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society which celebrated its hundredth anniversary in 2005.
The Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.
The Society's archive and library is housed at The Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month.
Donations to the archive are welcomed. Contributions of photos and documents, even from the recent past.
A catalogue of the Society's is available on their website..
One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.
Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.

Hebden Bridge Camera Club - The Changing Face of Hebden Bridge
Subject
The topic of the resource
The Changing Face of Hebden Bridge and its Environs.
This photographic project, supported financially by Hebden Royd Town Council, provides us with an invaluable record, looking as it does at the changing face of Hebden Bridge and the surrounding district, over the last fifty years or so.
Until March 2014 this collection of photographic prints was housed in the Hebden Bridge Library.
We are indebted to the members of the Hebden Bridge Camera Club for all their efforts in the past, now, and in the future.
Description
An account of the resource
The Camera Club was formed in the summer of 1952 from a special interest section of the Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society. Initially the new club was called the Calder Camera Club but following a certain amount of confusion regarding its location, after a couple of years, the name was changed to Hebden Bridge Camera Club. Originally the Club met over Horner’s Barber’s shop on Market Street and subsequently in a room over the Council Offices. We now meet at the Masonic Hall, Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge.
The Club is a member of the Yorkshire Photographic Union (YPU) and through this is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. This allows us to participate in competitions, exhibitions and various seminars, both at County and National levels. In this context the Club hosted the YPU’s annual “Assembly and Exhibition” in 1973 and again in 1982.
From September to April the Club meets weekly, the principal activities being a bi-monthly print and projected images competition and lectures on photography-related subjects. We also take part in occasional inter-club competitions. During the summer we meet once per fortnight and these meetings usually takes the form of a walk around places of local interest. The Club also holds an annual print exhibition which is gaining in popularity each year.
With the advent of digital imaging and the ease with which high quality prints can now be produced, there has been a resurgence in amateur photography and this has been reflected the growing interest in the Club’s activities and in new membership. However, we are still a relatively small club and new members are always welcome. So if you’re a novice wishing to improve your technique, or an experienced photographer prepared to test your ability in competition, why not come along and sample a few meetings – expect a friendly welcome.
