LYRS 6103 - 1963. Sowerby Bridge Station Signal Box - 'stove' side and door gable looking west. The tracks going off left were the Rishworth Branch although that had completely closed by the time this photo was taken. The Box has now gone and all the tracks and platforms in this photo have been lifted and the station building was demolished fallowing a fire in 1978. In short nothing in this photo remains apart from the hillside. The gabled extension beside the steps was usually the signal man's toilet facility.

LYRS 6094 - 1963. Ripponden Tunnel - east portal behind Sowerby Bridge Station (bricked up). The branch line from Sowerby Bridge to Ripponden opened in 1878 and on to Rishworth in 1881. The original intention had been to tunnel under Blackstone Edge and re-join the Manchester line near Smithy Bridge so as to reduce journey time between Manchester and Leeds. This did not proceed and the Standedge Line became the preferred direct route between the two cities. The Branch couldn't compete first with electric trams and then later with the addition of motor buses and it closed to passengers in 1929 and finally to all traffic in 1958.

LYRS 2577 - Watson Crossing Halt - general view circa 1957 looking towards Sowerby Bridge and the west portal of Ripponden Tunnel under Scarr Head. The Branch from Sowerby Bridge to Ripponden opened in 1878 and on to Rishworth in 1881. The original intention had been to tunnel under Blackstone Edge and re-join the Manchester line near Smithy Bridge so as to reduce journey time between Manchester and Leeds but this was abandoned. Railmotors, short tank engines with a carriage attached, seen here, were introduced on the Rishworth Branch in 1907 in response to competition from electric trams. As a result of further competition from motor buses the Branch closed to passengers in 1929 and fully in 1958. Although built double track only one was ever used. Note Fixed distance signal protecting tunnel entrance.

Description
An account of the resource
LYRS 3534. Rishworth Trestle Bridge - carrying station approach. The branch closed to passengers in 1929 and finally to all traffic in 1958.
In 1953 the bridge, the only access for freight traffic to the station, was in need of repair, but British Railways did not see this as being cost effective. As a result the line between Rishworth and Ripponden was then closed, with the rest of the branch only remaining open until 1958.
