A lifelong resident of Todmorden, Thomas has always had a strong interest in the history of Todmorden and the surrounding area, as can be seen in this collection. His interest in photography started over 50 years ago; he became a member of Todmorden Camera Club, joining in 1971. He worked for the Todmorden Co-op from 1950 to 1971, then for Todmorden Borough Council, until local government changes in 1974, when he joined the West Yorkshire County Council until that was abolished in 1986. Finally, from 1986 until his retirement he worked for Calderdale MBC.

In the 1980s much of the industrial heritage of the South Pennine area was being changed or in some cases lost. Pennine Heritage commissioned a survey of the condition of mills in the area. Photographs were taken when the survey was carried out, and the survey results have been added to those images in this collection.

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This was one of Todmorden’s most important mill sites – the centre of Fieldens’ cotton empire. Covering an 8 acre site it was the largest 19C mill in this district, much of the site taken up by a massive weaving shed which house 1,000 looms. This has now been largely demolished. Three storey

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A varied mix of interconnected two and three storey, stone and brick built buildings – mostly late 19C. Remains of a circular chimney by the canal as well as part of a former weaving shed (now with new roof). Was formerly a cotton mill and may stand on an earlier mill site.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Some of the buildings are used by a clothing manufacturer and a textile firm, who are also based at Harley House Mill (see CD40). Other parts look empty and somewhat run down.
