Foster Mill - ALC08282
Hebden Bridge, Foster Mill, Foster Lane Chapel
Cross Lanes Methodist Chapel is in the top left hand corner of the photo, with the Manse being in the top centre at the top of the photo. From the Manse Moss Lane runs down the hill, the house with the smoke and the gardens is Slater Bank.
Foster Mill takes up the lower right hand side of the photo. The houses on the left are part of Foster Lane and the large building across Windsor Road and Spring Grove, with the interesting roof, is Foster Lane Methodist Church and School, which was designed by William Henry Cockroft, of West End, Hebden Bridge, built in 1904, and demolished in the 1960s.

Ashley House and Masonic Hall, Hebden Bridge- ALC08278
Hebden Bridge, Moss Lane, Ashley House, Masonic Hall
In the bottom centre is Ashley House, at one time a care home, now as Angel Dale offering Bed & Breakfast. The road winding up the hill is Moss Lane with Slater Bank to the right of it and on the left hand edge of the picture Cross Lanes Chapel. Note how few trees there are on the hillside leading to Heptonstall.
The building in the bottom left hand corner is the Hebden Bridge Masonic Lodge. The first meeting was on 28th January 1796 when the warrant was issued. Meetings were held in the "Ring of Bells". In July 1809, the Lodge moved to Heptonstall and held its meetings at the Stag Hotel. In 1822, the Lodge moved to the White Horse Inn, Hebden Bridge, then to Hope Street in 1890 and finally on 23rd October 1911, Prince Frederick Lodge No. 307 moved into its present building in Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge. In January 1996, The Lodge received its Bicentenary Certificate from the United Grand Lodge.

Slater Bank, Hebden Bridge - ALC00783
Hebden Bridge, Moss Lane, Places, Slater Bank, Street Names
Situated at the top of Moss Lane with an excellent view over Hebden Bridge. The houses of Highfield Crescent are on the left of the picture in the distance.
There was a school connected with Slater Bank. It was run by a Mr Moss, and known as Moss’s Academy. It is mentioned in the 1841 census as being on Bridge Lanes but by 1851 it was at Slater bank, it probably moved there about 1850. It remained at Slater Bank until around 1880. However Moss’s Academy took boarders and for a large part of its time the dormitories were at Slater Bank and the School was below in Hebden on Hangingroyd Lane at what is now the Masonic Hall.
