Wainhouse Tower - CBC06082
Architecture, Halifax, Wainhouse Tower, tower
This is the tallest building in Calderdale and is named after John Wainhouse, the industrialist who funded it. Although originally planned as a chimney it was never used as one and remained as a folly, reputedly the tallest one in the world. Rumours persist that Wainhouse's main motive in building it was due to a feud he had with landowner Sir Henry Edwards who claimed to have the most private estate in Halifax. Wainhouse Tower overlooked his lands so he could no longer make this claim. The tower remains a prominent local landmark and is opened to the public on a few days each year, mostly Bank Holiday Mondays. If you plan on visiting be aware that you have to walk up the steps. There is no lift!

Cross Stone Church, 1980 - TNC00292.tif
Cross Stone Church, tower
The Chapel of Cross Stone or Cross Stone takes its name from a fragment of an 11th century cross found in the wall of a barn. In the Township of Stansfield, it was part of the Heptonstall parish, but due to the size of the area covered, a sub chapel or chapel-of-ease was built at Cross Stone about 1450. Although rites were performed at Cross Stone, they were not official until recorded in the Register at Heptonstall. This was true until the liberalizations of the 1800s. The first church at Cross Stone was built in 1527 and pulled down in 1717 and then replaced. The famous Parson William Grimshaw was curate here from 1731 to 1741, before moving to Haworth where he preceded the Rev Patrick Bronte. He was a close friend and colleague of John Wesley during the early days of the non-conformists and became noted for his passionate pulpit oratory. The Rev John Fennel, uncle of Mrs Patrick Bronte, was here from 1819-1841 and the Bronte children stayed on a visit in 1829. From Weaver to Web.
The church ceased to be used for worship due to subsidence damage in the 1970s, was formally closed in 1980 and sold in 1988 for residential conversion. Allegedly most of the contents including the Kempe stained glass were lost in transit when a ship sank on its way to a buyer in the USA.

Heptonstall Old and New Churches - ALC06361

HEPTONSTALL
According to an old deed, in the early part of the 17th century there was a Cloth Hall, the property of John Sunderland , of Horshold.
But the glory of Heptonstall is the old church, or rather it is sad to write, the ruins of the old church.
Tourists are astonished and antiquarians pained to learn that this fine pile was not repaired some years ago, to continue for generations the place of worship for this parish, and equally are they astonished to see that it should have been allowed to fall into dilapidation.
As the tourist will plainly perceive a new church has been built, and was consecrated October 26, 1854. But we cannot refrain from stating that the architect lamentably erred in planning the church in that particular style of architecture. This church with its decorated and light details would show to better advantage in the elegant street of a town, having here nothing in keeping with its antique surroundings.
The tower of the old church, plain and massive-looking, and just over-topping the neighbouring houses, admirably harmonises with the rugged cottages and adjacent rounded hills.
Extracts from "Guide to Hardcastle Crags, Hebden Bridge & Neighbourhood including Cragg Valley, Colden Valley and Heptonstall" .

1720 Singing-loft put in the north chancel.
1751 Loft put in the west end of the north nave.
1765 "The vestry of ye Church of Heptonstall was broken open and out of ye chest there ye communion plate was stolen in ye night between ye 15th and 16th December"
1810 10th April a clock was erected in the tower.
1847 A great storm damaged the church.

Stones Mill, Bar Lane, Rishworth - HPC00409
Cobbles, Rishworth, Stones Mill, tower
NAME: STONES MILL
LOCATION: Quarter mile SW of Slitheroe Bridge
REF: RY 10
GRID REF: 033 187
CONDITION: Mostly empty
CLASSIFICATION: C
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A large, late Victorian mill that stands forgotten a few hundred yards above the main A672 road on the Upper Ryburn. It consists of two four storey stone buildings, each of considerable size and with square, ornamental staircase towers. These buildings date from the early 1880’s when the mill was rebuilt after a fire. The first mill to be erected on the site was a small cotton factory around 1800, which was enlarged in 1855. The present engine house is derelict and the dam filled in. Possible remains of a circular chimney by the road.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: One of the buildings is partly used for producing animal feed, but the majority of the site is empty, verging on dereliction. A great deal of renovation would be needed to restore the site, and the size of the buildings is a disadvantage. However, it is a striking remnant of the prosperity of the 19C textile industry, and should merit listing to prevent demolition and possibly encourage some refurbishment.
