Description
An account of the resource
Alice Longstaff (née Speak) (d. 1992 aged 85) was a remarkable lady. Born at Little Lear Ings farm in Heptonstall on May 16 1907, she started work at 14 years old, in September 1921, as apprentice photographer at the Westerman Studio, 25 West End, Hebden Bridge. Crossley Westerman had established the studio in 1890; on his death in 1918 his daughter Ada took over the business, and it was Ada who trained the young apprentice. Alice remained there for the next 70 years. In 1935 she and her family bought the business, and her brother Clement became the framer and darkroom technician, until he died in 1963. In 1935 Alice married John Longstaff who joined the business as picture framer when Clement died, and they continued to work together until her death in 1992.
0ne of the most frequently-asked questions about the Longstaff Collection is why was it named after Alice, when so many of the photographs in the archive are credited to her predecessor Crossley Westerman?
Alice's Album - The Story of a Hebden Bridge Photographer's Studio, has the answer and much more! Copies are still available from local bookshops and online from Hebweb. This 68-page high quality soft-back lavishly illustrated with photographs in colour, sepia and black and white, it tells the story not only of Alice but of Crossley Westerman and his daughter, Ada, too, without whom there would be no collection.
Founder of the studio in the early 1890s, Crossley Westerman could have had little inkling of the amazing retailing tradition he had set in motion, ending only with the death, 100 years later, of Alice Longstaff who took over in 1935.
It's amazing enough for a business to survive for around a century but for it to be in the hands of only three proprietors makes for a fascinating story which "Alice's Album" tells from beginning to end.

Description
An account of the resource
The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. IMAGES ARE NOT FOR SALE – Please, do not remove the watermark or strip the metadata, thank you. Description
An account of the resource
Three hundred years ago, most of the population would be found in the farms and cottages on the upland "shelf", in areas such as Shore, Mankinholes and Bottomley. Families were self-sufficient, growing and producing most of their own food and clothing.
Gradually, the merchant clothiers, the entrepreneurs of the 17th - 18th century emerged. The domestic system with its "putting-out" system became the norm. Hand loom weavers working at home would take their woven pieces to the clothier at the "takkin' in shop". In return he would furnish them with more wool to be taken home and spun and woven. The clothier would visit the cloth or piece hall to sell the woven pieces and to buy wool. A view of Ratcher and Haugh Stones, above Holebottom.
The three-storey Ratcher cottage on the right is a typical example of the building constructed specifically for a cottage industry. It was later used as a bobbin factory for Lawrence Wilson from 1823.

The topic of the resource
In the 1980s much of the industrial heritage of the South Pennine area was being changed or in some cases lost. Pennine Heritage commissioned a survey of the condition of mills in the area. Photographs were taken when the survey was carried out, and the survey results have been added to those images in this collection.

Description
An account of the resource
NAME: MOOR BROOK MILLS
LOCATION: Holmfirth Road, New Mill
REF: HU 38
GRID REF: 162 088
CLASSIFICATION: B and C
CONDITION: Fully used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid – late 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Formerly known as New Mill Mills, the oldest part of this site is a three and four storey, single gabled stone building (date stone 1838). Some later additions. Adjacent is a larger, late 19C four storey building with small tower – possibly upper stories been removed. Large weaving sheds of varying dates and modern industrial buildings stretch out towards Glendale Mill (see HV 35). Octagonal stone chimney (capped) is still in use. This was probably a water powered site originally, and the long mill race has disappeared under the later extensions to the site. Became known as Moorbrook Mills after being taken over by Moorhouses and Brooks in 1912.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: This mill is still engaged in textile manufacturing and is quite a large industrial site. It is still owned by a local family firm.

Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.
