On the GNR ‘short line’ from Leeds Central to Bradford the station opened with the line in 1854. To the west of the station there was the junction with the Pudsey loop line which had opened in 1893 and closed in 1965. Bramley station closed in 1966 about the time of this photo and the buildings were demolished; a new station with bus stop shelters opened in 1983.
The photo is taken from a footbridge which connected the two platforms.

Description
An account of the resource
The station on the M&LR’s Calder Valley Main Line was originally known as North Dean. It was opened in July 1844 on completion of the M&LR’s Halifax Branch which ran from a junction at North Dean up to a terminus station at Shaw Syke, south of Halifax town centre.
The view here is looking down the line towards Elland Tunnel and the Stainland Branch junction was just beyond the white picket fence in the far centre of the photo. The left hand track running off bottom right is the junction for the steeply graded line up to Halifax.
The station closed in September 1962 but the junction remains in use.

Description
An account of the resource
The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. Description
An account of the resource
Originally built as a cotton spinning mill in the early 19th Century, the buildings were later converted to a print and dye works. The abundant water supply was the chief reason for the selection of the site, but the chimney which is situated on the millside provides evidence that steam power was also used.

Another Fielden Mill utilising water power with a unique system of three waterwheels, each fed by a stepped series of dams. This mill was later converted to steam power. Lumbutts Mill and Jumb Mill were interconnected by a conveyor system which passed over the main road. The mills ceased production in the 1920s.

Description
An account of the resource
Lumbutts Mill 1900s - In addition to the parent mill at Waterside, Fielden Bros owned several smaller mills in the valleys around Todmorden, almost all of which were used for spinning purposes. Two of these were situated in the Lumbutts Clough - the highest one being Lumbutts Mill, followed by Jumb Mill. At Lumbutts, a remarkable system was devised for providing water power. A series of dams close to the mill fed three water wheels, positioned vertically above each other, so as to use the same water over and over again. The discharged flow then went on to drive the steam turbine at Jumb Mill and, ultimately, the water wheel at Causey Mill. Lumbutts Mill and Jumb Mill both ceased production in the 1920s.

The photograph shows the overhead gantry used for transporting cotton goods between the two buildings on either side of the road. The mill manager's house can be seen on the right with the water wheel tower in the background. The mill has long since been demolished but the tower remains, though ruined, as a monument to industrial enterprise. Now part of an outdoor activity centre, it is occasionally used for abseiling practise.

Description
An account of the resource
When this photograph was taken, c. 1900-1910, all that remained of the former weaving and spinning mill was the upper wheel race. Built in 1805 the mill was operated by the Ormerod Bros. from 1824 until about 1870. The place stood empty for many years before being taken down in 1894. The cottage at the junction of Gorpley and Midgelden Cloughs is still standing, although uninhabited for more than fifty years.

In the 1980s much of the industrial heritage of the South Pennine area was being changed or in some cases lost. Pennine Heritage commissioned a survey of the condition of mills in the area. Photographs were taken when the survey was carried out, and the survey results have been added to those images in this collection.

Description
An account of the resource
In about 1830 a series of four dams was constructed above the Fieldens’ Lumbutts Mill to feed a new water-wheel tower. This striking industrial monument housed three wheels, one vertically above the other, in an ingenious piece of engineering that has been attributed to William Fairbairn. Each of the overshot wheels was 30 feet in diameter and 6 feet wide. The water from the top dam fell a distance of 90 feet inside the tower and was joined by additional water from the other dams to generate in excess of 53 horse power when using the full supply of 18 tons of water per minute. Adjoining the 98-foot-high tower is a chimney housing a spiral staircase.
