Description
An account of the resource
The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. The topic of the resource
In the 1980s much of the industrial heritage of the South Pennine area was being changed or in some cases lost. Pennine Heritage commissioned a survey of the condition of mills in the area. Photographs were taken when the survey was carried out, and the survey results have been added to those images in this collection.

Description
An account of the resource
NAME: CASTLE MILL/PAPER MILL/CRAGG MILL
LOCATION: Cragg Bottom
REF: CD133/134/135
GRID REF: 006 237
CLASSIFICATION: A
CONDITION: Ruins
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Situated in a heavily wooded gorge of Cragg Brook, these three ruins are very close together and difficult to tell apart. The remains of walls built into the valley side, a wheel pit (with ornamental wheel), race, small dam and weir and the site of a gasometer holder can be seen. The paper mill dates from the mid 18C. The other two were cotton mills. Cragg Mill burned down in 1894.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Historical and visitor potential of these remains of early water powered sites could be realised. However, there are problems of access, in particular the best remains are now part of a private garden, although they can be seen from a footpath. Also, unsightly scrap heap and tipping near the site of Castle Mill could be eradicated
Photo taken c1985.

Historic Homes of Yorkshire collection
Description
An account of the resource
This Album contains images with notes on the Historic Homes of Yorkshire, a series of lectures first given to the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society by Mr. George Hepworth around 1916. An architect by profession, in 1894 he was a founder member of the Brighouse Photographic Society, and became a much sort after photographic artist and lanternist (someone who operates a magic lantern). He achieved wide popularity with his book 'Brighouse, its Scenery and Antiquities'; as only a 100 copies were published it has become something of a collectors item. The lectures take the form of a guided tour of the properties, and the language of the original notes has been maintained.

See Exhibit

Burton Agnes Hall, Wooden Wheel for Pumping Water - HLS05709
Subject
The topic of the resource
Architecture, Buildings, Hall, Water Wheel
Description
An account of the resource
Slide 4 - In the outbuilding facing the Kitchen Court is an interesting relic of bygone days - an old wheel some fourteen feet in diameter, made of wood, and formally used for pumping water, by man-power, from a draw well.
As will be noticed, the wheel has two sets of spokes fixed into a wooden shaft in the centre, and the outer rim of the wheel is boarded cross ways, and of sufficient breadth to admit a man getting inside between the two sets of spokes. By walking, or rather running, on the inside circumference of the Wheel, the man's weight would propel and cause it to revolve on its axis, and setting in motion the gearing attached to the pump, and thus draw water from the well, to supply the Hall.
