Historic Homes of Yorkshire collection
Description
An account of the resource
This Album contains images with notes on the Historic Homes of Yorkshire, a series of lectures first given to the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society by Mr. George Hepworth around 1916. An architect by profession, in 1894 he was a founder member of the Brighouse Photographic Society, and became a much sort after photographic artist and lanternist (someone who operates a magic lantern). He achieved wide popularity with his book 'Brighouse, its Scenery and Antiquities'; as only a 100 copies were published it has become something of a collectors item. The lectures take the form of a guided tour of the properties, and the language of the original notes has been maintained.<br /><br />See <strong><a href="/exhibits/show/historic-homes-of-yorkshire" title="Link to exhibit of historic homes">Exhibit</a></strong>

Gilling Castle, Painted Window to the Great Chamber - HLS05812
Subject
The topic of the resource
Architecture, Buildings, Furniture, Hall, Interior, sculpture, stained glass
Description
An account of the resource
Slide 11 - Our other slide shows a portion of the bay window (on the left) which is devoted to the heraldry of the Constables of Burton Constable, whose connection with the Fairfaxes dates from 1594 when Thomas Fairfax married Catherine Constable.
Such in brief, is what we have very imperfectly been able to show and describe of Gilling Castle, which well deserves a visit. Its ivy clad walls, its gardens glowing with colour, its many peacocks sunning themselves along the terraces, the distant views, and the masses of deep wood crowning the nearby heights, make a series of pictures that will not soon be forgotten.

Description
An account of the resource
Slide 9 - The finishing touch is given to this fine apartment by the unrivalled display of painted glass in the here great windows. The south window is the richest and best preserved, as every light is painted glass, and in it we find a clue to its origin and a date, as on one of the quarries is signed by the artist who designed and executed it with the date of 1585.

Hebden Bridge Camera Club - The Changing Face of Hebden Bridge
Subject
The topic of the resource
The Changing Face of Hebden Bridge and its Environs.
This photographic project, supported financially by Hebden Royd Town Council, provides us with an invaluable record, looking as it does at the changing face of Hebden Bridge and the surrounding district, over the last fifty years or so.
Until March 2014 this collection of photographic prints was housed in the Hebden Bridge Library.
We are indebted to the members of the Hebden Bridge Camera Club for all their efforts in the past, now, and in the future.
Description
An account of the resource
The Camera Club was formed in the summer of 1952 from a special interest section of the Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society. Initially the new club was called the Calder Camera Club but following a certain amount of confusion regarding its location, after a couple of years, the name was changed to Hebden Bridge Camera Club. Originally the Club met over Horner’s Barber’s shop on Market Street and subsequently in a room over the Council Offices. We now meet at the Masonic Hall, Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge.
The Club is a member of the Yorkshire Photographic Union (YPU) and through this is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. This allows us to participate in competitions, exhibitions and various seminars, both at County and National levels. In this context the Club hosted the YPU’s annual “Assembly and Exhibition” in 1973 and again in 1982.
From September to April the Club meets weekly, the principal activities being a bi-monthly print and projected images competition and lectures on photography-related subjects. We also take part in occasional inter-club competitions. During the summer we meet once per fortnight and these meetings usually takes the form of a walk around places of local interest. The Club also holds an annual print exhibition which is gaining in popularity each year.
With the advent of digital imaging and the ease with which high quality prints can now be produced, there has been a resurgence in amateur photography and this has been reflected the growing interest in the Club’s activities and in new membership. However, we are still a relatively small club and new members are always welcome. So if you’re a novice wishing to improve your technique, or an experienced photographer prepared to test your ability in competition, why not come along and sample a few meetings – expect a friendly welcome.
