Title

Heptonstall 'Top o' th' Town' - ALC00420

Description

The people of Heptonstall depended for their water on four pumps. Here 'Top o' th' Town' pump is shown locked up, which usually happened on Saturday night, and it remained locked until Monday morning. A careful housewife would fill her setpot on Saturday ready to light early Monday morning, and at the same time put her can in the line ready to fill when the water came back on.

The pump was also locked in times of drought and only unlocked for a limited time.
