Description
An account of the resource
This Album contains images with notes on the Historic Homes of Yorkshire, a series of lectures first given to the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society by Mr. George Hepworth around 1916. An architect by profession, in 1894 he was a founder member of the Brighouse Photographic Society, and became a much sort after photographic artist and lanternist (someone who operates a magic lantern). He achieved wide popularity with his book 'Brighouse, its Scenery and Antiquities'; as only a 100 copies were published it has become something of a collectors item. The lectures take the form of a guided tour of the properties, and the language of the original notes has been maintained.

See Exhibit

Description
An account of the resource
Slide 11: The Terraces are a feature of the place, and were constructed at an enormous cost by Sir John Lewis. He adorned them with a profusion of statuary of which a few specimens still remain.
Sir John Lewis was raised to the Baronetcy in 1660 and died in 1671. He erected and endowed an hospital at Ledsham for the maintenance of ten aged poor people, who by his will are required religiously to observe the Sabbath day, and to be present at Church in time for Divine Service and sermon.
Lady Elizabeth Hastings added Σ10 per annum for the better support of St. John Baptist's Hospital founded by her grandfather.
