Title

Queens Mill - HPC00187

Description

NAME: QUEENS MILL

LOCATION: Meltham Road, Honley

REF: HU 48

GRID REF: 135 115

CLASSIFICATION: B and C

CONDITION: Mostly used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: From early 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Originally known as Queen’s Square Mill due to the site being built in the form of a square. Probably originally built c1820 and water powered, although difficult to see where the water supply came from now that the surrounding area has been built over. Possible evidence of a former entrance for the race into a much altered early-mid 19C building on Bradshaw Road. Main part of mill demolished, but small weaving sheds and other subsidiary buildings remain. Some of the site was used as an iron works by the late 19C. Also known as Victoria Mill.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The remaining parts of the site are now used separately by a few small firms. The mill is now located within a mostly residential part of Honley.

Photo taken c1985.
