Title
Smithy Place - HPC00195
Description
NAME: SMITHY PLACE MILLS
LOCATION: Smithy Place, Brockholes
REF: HU 44
GRID REF: 150 111
CLASSIFICATION: B and C
CONDITION: Mostly used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early/late 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: An interesting site, reflecting the former sharing of the site by two or more manufacturers (a fairly commonplace occurrence in the textile mills). Here, there are three separate chimneys – the largest is 100ft plus high, octagonal and with adjacent engine house. Earliest surviving building is located by the river with a square stone chimney built into the roof. A woollen mill was first recorded here in 1791, and the dam and part of the race can be seen. Main building probably mid 19C, stone built and reduced to three storeys with new roof added. Small weaving shed and various other stone and brick built extensions/buildings, and the remains of another square, stone chimney. Site was mostly converted to dyeing and finishing in the late 19C.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is still used for dyeing and finishing. Some alterations and repairs have taken place, but further improvement or demolition may become necessary.
