Title

Dover Mill, Cartworth, Holmfirth - HPC00250

Description

NAME: DOVER MILL

LOCATION: Cartworth

REF: HV 19

GRID REF: 145 070

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Derelict

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid 19C/early 20C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Located in an attractive setting this is quite a large site with buildings of various dates. A fulling mill probably stood around here, and it was first recorded as a woollen mill in 1812. When visited, the oldest remaining part is mid 19C – two and three storey building with some later extensions. Also a number of later stone and brick buildings, a tall square stone chimney and a large dam (almost empty). The mill was converted to a dyeworks by the turn of this century. Gutted by fire in 1959. Cottages downstream.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill appears to have been little used since the fire and much of it has been demolished and cleared. The surviving buildings are in poor condition and complete demolition seems the most likely fate for this site.
