Title

Brearley - HPC00288

Description

NAME: BREARLEY LOWER MILL

LOCATION: Brearley

REF: CD142

GRID REF: 027 259

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C/20C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This was the site of the Midgley Manorial Corn Mill – first recorded in 1296. It was partly converted to textile manufacture in the late 18C. In 1849 there was a four storey mill with a 16ft diameter waterwheel. Today, the site comprises a small complex of mainly late 19C and 20C buildings – mostly one and two storey, stone built with brick additions and alterations. However, a small earlier building survives by the river and the sluice gates and weir are still much in evidence. On the opposite side of the river was the site of Sowerby fulling mill, which disappeared c1880.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill complex has been subdivided into small industrial and commercial units, which appear to be mostly occupied. The sluice gates are worth preserving as a reminder of its water powered days.

Photo taken c1985.
