Title
New Mills , Marsden, c1985- HPC00403
Description
LOCATION: Brougham Road, Marsden
REF: CV8
GRID REF: 050 117
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Mostly used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19/early20C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Another of the Crowther family’s large mill complexes constructed around the turn of this century. It appears to cover two older mill sites – the Old Corn Mill and Frank, or Bob, Mill. The ‘old’ mill seems to have been replaced by a ‘new’ mill (hence the present name) in the mid 19C, which was a paintworks for many years. Demolished 1902, and replaced by the two large main mill buildings – four and five storey, stone built with square towers. Edwardian details, especially on the office frontage along Brougham Road. Also large, mainly low level warehouses/sheds on the site. The very tall, octagonal stone chimney stands just across the river from the main site.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is still used for textiles, mostly carpet yarn spinning. Along with Bank Bottom Mill (see CV5) this is one of the few large mills remaining, still mostly employed in textiles manufacture. The chimney is a prominent landmark.
