The house was built in 1826 by Thomas Ramsbottom. In 1842, the Fielden family moved here from Dawson Weir. In 1849, Samuel Fielden inherited the mansion and estate after his father's death. The Fielden School of Art was built here in 1872 In 1910, Todmorden Corporation bought the 75-acre estate from John Ashton Fielden for £10,000, and the grounds became Centre Vale Park. During World War I it was used as a military hospital, and later housed the town's museum, but sadly closed in 1947 because of dry rot, and the building was demolished in 1953. A Garden of Remembrance was created from what was originally the kitchen garden of the House. Although off the rails, the train was carried for a further 100 yards "tearing up the rails as if they were wire". The engine ploughed into the embankment on the North side of the cutting. The first carriage was ripped off its bogies, but stayed upright. The second carriage took most of the impact and was described as "smashed into matchwood". It was in this carriage that the deaths and most of the injuries occurred. The remaining carriages were all damaged with broken windows and splintered floorboards. Built at a cost of £2,200 it was opened on 13th March 1909 by Mrs E. J. Crossley of Royd House, Hebden Bridge. Judging by the presence of a brass band, this could have been the opening ceremony in 1909. There was no water supply to the chapel, and baptisms were performed at Jumble Hole Dam. Hammer-dressed stone with ashlar dressings to chapel. Forms an L-shaped group with manse to the left which is of 2 storeys. Quoins. 3 bays of sashed windows with plain stone surrounds. Doorway in 2nd bay at junction with earlier bay defined by quoins and gutter brackets. Coped gable to left hand return wall and 3 tall corniced stacks to ridge. Chapel has pedimented gabled front. 5 bays articulated by channelled quoin pilasters and pilaster strips (1 + 3 + 1).
