                <text>NAME: TRAVIS HOLME MILL

LOCATION: Rochdale Road, Walsden

REF: CD11

GRID REF: 931 224

CLASSIFICATION: B and C

CONDITION: Fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: From late 18C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Here or hereabouts was the site of Travis Holme Mill, possibly an early fulling mill and recorded as working in 1794. Later became a cotton mill, but disused by 1900. The main part of the mill has gone and was located close to the canal. Some foundations can be seen. A very small building remains (built over Walsden Water) that was probably connected. There is a much altered early 19C stone part, with a much later brick built extension. Now known a Lacy Mill.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The surviving building is subdivided between an electrical contractor and a joiner. The older part is in a dilapidated condition and looks in need of further repair.

From a Mill Survey carried out in 1984.

                <text>NAME: SMITHY PLACE MILLS

LOCATION: Smithy Place, Brockholes

REF: HU 44

GRID REF: 150 111

CLASSIFICATION: B and C

CONDITION: Mostly used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early/late 19C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: An interesting site, reflecting the former sharing of the site by two or more manufacturers (a fairly commonplace occurrence in the textile mills). Here, there are three separate chimneys – the largest is 100ft plus high, octagonal and with adjacent engine house. Earliest surviving building is located by the river with a square stone chimney built into the roof. A woollen mill was first recorded here in 1791, and the dam and part of the race can be seen. Main building probably mid 19C, stone built and reduced to three storeys with new roof added. Small weaving shed and various other stone and brick built extensions/buildings, and the remains of another square, stone chimney. Site was mostly converted to dyeing and finishing in the late 19C.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is still used for dyeing and finishing. Some alterations and repairs have taken place, but further improvement or demolition may become necessary.

LOCATION: Midgley Road, Mytholmroyd

REF: CD 127

GRID REF: 015 263

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Mostly used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: There was a woollen mill here by 1850 with a small waterwheel fed by the waters of White Lee Clough. By 1857 there was a five storey mill, probably the building that stands at right angles to Midgley road. Adjacent is a later four storey stone building. There have been various extensions and additions, including a weaving shed. This was known by a separate name at one time. No sign of a chimney.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: On the whole the mill buildings appear to be in very good condition, and have been successfully subdivided into small units and workshops. Occupants include two joiners, a building contractor, cabinet maker, wholesale clothing business and a motor engineers. Interior of weaving shed has been modernised. Oldest building could have some potential for listing.

                <text>NAME: CANAL WHARF SAW MILLS
LOCATION: Half a mile SE of Hebden Bridge
REF: CD122
CLASSIFICATION: D
CONDITION: Mostly used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This mill has a long history of clog-making since it was erected around the 1860s. It is a large, mainly four storey stone building with a typical iron and timber constructed interior. The ‘candle-stick’ circular stone chimney has been reduced.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill was taken over 10 years ago by the present owners, who can view the various hand-working processes. Also mill shop and coffee bar. The emphasis on promoting the mill as a visitor attraction has proved useful.

                <text>NAME: QUEENS MILL

LOCATION: Meltham Road, Honley

REF: HU 48

GRID REF: 135 115

CLASSIFICATION: B and C

CONDITION: Mostly used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: From early 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Originally known as Queen’s Square Mill due to the site being built in the form of a square. Probably originally built c1820 and water powered, although difficult to see where the water supply came from now that the surrounding area has been built over. Possible evidence of a former entrance for the race into a much altered early-mid 19C building on Bradshaw Road. Main part of mill demolished, but small weaving sheds and other subsidiary buildings remain. Some of the site was used as an iron works by the late 19C. Also known as Victoria Mill.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The remaining parts of the site are now used separately by a few small firms. The mill is now located within a mostly residential part of Honley.

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Very little remains of this mill, demolished nearly twenty years ago. One or two walls, bits of machinery, weirs and sluices upstream and a row of associated cottages can be seen. The mill was built c1818, and by the late 1860s there were two four storey buildings, engine house and chimney on the site. Much of the site is now covered by gardens and allotments.

CONDITION: Fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 18C/mid 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This is principally an old corn mill site, although it is possible that some textile manufacture took place here at some stage, woollen manufacturing being recorded at Honley Mill in 1796. There is a good example of a surviving early mill building, a late 18C/early 19C two storey building with mullioned windows and out of character iron roof. Also on the site is a small mid 19C two storey stone building.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site maintains its links with the past and is still used by a corn agricultural merchant. The old building has been spoilt somewhat by the new roof and storage tanks built across the front.

CLASSIFICATION: A
CONDITION: Mostly disappeared
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early-mid 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: It is now difficult to recognise this site as a former textile mill. Some small, late 19C, two storey buildings plus part of a former weaving shed remain close to Burnley Road, but most of the old mill must have been demolished. This includes an early to mid 19C, three storey building that may have been part of the original mill here. When visited it was derelict and it has subsequently been knocked down (Spring 19840. This was possibly a water powered site at one time and there are remains of two dried up dams, along with sluice gear.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is now used as a garage. The remaining buildings have been whitewashed and a modern showroom added. Little is left of interest now.

It consists of large, four and five storey, stone built buildings on either side of New Road (built in the 1880’s), weaving sheds, engine house and circular stone chimney. The site dates from 1842, however, and the remains of an earlier mill can be seen at the rear and side of the present mill, along with a small chimney on the hillside above. The mill was owned by the Murgatroyd family, a famous local name.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Part of the mill complex seems to be used for storage, but much of the floor space is disused. However, it appears to be in reasonable condition, and there are plans to convert the mill into an industrial museum/heritage centre. Hopefully, such a scheme will be realised to prevent the mill becoming derelict.

REF: LD 11

GRID REF: 038 252

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C/20C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A fulling mill was built on the site of the present mill in the late 16C, fed by a half mile long goit. Another fulling mill stood across the brook, on a site now covered by the Weavers Arms public house. In the 19C corn was ground here at some stage, as well as woollen textile manufacturing, which was first recorded here in 1799. The present mill is a large, mostly three storey stone building with a similar sized extension of the eastern side, including a small tower and a square stone chimney. Brick weaving shed at rear.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is fully used by a textiles fabrics firm, and hopefully will continue to be used.

                <text>NAME: OATS ROYD MILL

LOCATION: Half mile NE of Luddenden

REF: LD 9

GRID REF: 039 267

CLASSIFICATION: D

CONDITION: Mostly empty

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Situated on the valley side above Luddenden village, this Grade 2 listed building is a classic example of a large, late 19C woollen mill. The mill was owned by the Murgatroyd family – a famous local name.

                <text>NAME: LOWER SOYLAND MILL
LOCATION: Foot of Mill Bank
REF: RY 26
GRID REF: 035 212
CLASSIFICATION: B
CONDITION: Part disappeared/part used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early to mid 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: The original site of the ancient manorial corn mill for Soyland Township was probably here, or in close proximity at the junction of Severhills and Lumb Cloughs. Small cotton mill here in the 19C. Some of the site has probably gone, as has the dam. A late Georgian/early Victorian two storey building, much altered and modernised, remains, and was probably a mill building at one time.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: This building has been modernised and converted into residential flats. This conversion has been well done, in keeping with its position in the Mill Bank Conservation area. A number of fine vernacular buildings in the vicinity.
