LOCATION: Bottoms
REF: CD 5
GRID REF: 934 214
CLASSIFICATION: D
CONDITION: Empty
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C/earkt 20C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This is one of the few brick-built mills in this district, and its main feature is a large, 15 light weaving shed. Other buildings mainly two storey, with engine house and 100ft plus high circular chimney emblazoned with the mill’s name.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is currently empty, although part of it is used for storage. The large weaving shed may have potential for industrial re-use. Information from Mill Survey carried out in 1984.

NAME: BOTTOMS MILL
LOCATION: Bottoms
REF: CD6
GRID REF: 934 214
CLASSIFICATION: D
CONDITION: Fully used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Quite a small mill site on either side of Rochdale Road. Mill buildings and a weaving shed were first erected in the 1850’s on the western side and subsequently enlarged. The buildings are mainly stone built, with some brick additions and alterations. Large stone weaving shed and a later, circular brick chimney. Across the road is a group of small stone buildings and a brick built weaving shed with an octagonal stone chimney (probably reduced). This was the site of WINTERBUTLEE MILL, built c1860 as a cotton spinning mill and purchased by Bottoms Mill in 1820. This site was much larger at one time – main mill buildings now gone.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: This mill is one of only seven in Todmorden area still engaged in textiles manufacture, cotton waste spinning being the main activity here. Mill shop on the site. The main chimney (together with that of Jubilee Mill next door) is a notable land mark in this part of the Todmorden-Littleborough valley.
Information from Mill survey carried out in 1984.

                <text>NAME: STRINES MILL
LOCATION: Bottoms
REF: CD 4
GRID REF: 933 213
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Mostly used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid 19c. Site earlier
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This is probably the site of an earlier water-powered cotton mill, a Strines Mill was recorded in 1794. By 1850 it had been converted to a machinery works. There is a small, two storey stone building with adjoining one storey shed that has been much altered (mid 19c), were also probably connected. The remains of a brick chimney can be seen among the trees above the works. Very little evidence now of its water powered days.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The buildings on the site are of quite an early date, but are in poor condition and have been rather crudely repaired and altered. The main part is sub-divided between a garage workshop and a joiner’s premises. The pungent aroma around the site can be traced to a tripe dressing works in one of the adjacent buildings

LOCATION: Ramsden Wood

REF: CD2

GRID REF: 928 213

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C/early 20C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Together with Ramsden Mill just below, this site is also known as Ramsden Wood Mills. It was possibly earlier known as Springwood Mill, which was erected c1821. A small two storey stone building at the northern end of the site may date from this period. It was converted from cotton to dyeing and finishing in 1885 and the large brick built main building and sheds replaced the earlier mill. The two dams remain in very good condition and part of the old goit can be traced.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is now a print works and the relatively modern buildings are suited for continued industrial use. From Mill Survey carried out 1984. Since the Mill Survey was carried out in 1984 things have changed somewhat.

Walsden Printing Company occupied both Ramsden & Spring Mill, running them as a textile printing works. They finally closed in 2001.

The mills have now been demolished and a housing estate occupies the site.

LOCATION: Severhills Clough
REF: RY 25
GRID REF: 034 210
CLASSIFICATION: A
CONDITION: Ruins
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early-mid 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Named as Soyland Mill on the First Series OS Map, this is probably the site of a medieval corn mill, although the original site may have been further downstream (see RY 26). Probably enlarged and converted to cotton manufacture in the early 19C. Had changed to woollen production c1900 but probably became disused soon afterwards. The site is now overgrown but among the trees are some very good remains of at least a three storey mill. The wheel pit is visible as well as the remains of a stone chimney. Large dam behind, with weir and some sluice gear.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: There is a track leading to the ruins, but on private land so access is limited. A good example of a ruined mill, and of historical and industrial interest. The site falls within the Mill Bank and Cottonstones Conservation Area.

                <text>BIRKS MILL
LOCATION: Hollingworth Lane, Walsden
REF: CD7
GRID REF: 935 219
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Semi-used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: An early water powered site, a carding and spinning mill was recorded here in 1791. In 1854 Robert Fielden took over the mill and remodelled it, adding a weaving shed, chimney and engine. The two and three storey rectangular stone built main building probably dates from this period. Later stone extension on the front, and brick additions at rear. The stone weaving shed remains, and there is a later brick shed at the rear of the site. The original chimney has disappeared, but the dam remains on the hillside above.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: A long established textiles firm was operating here until recently. Now most of the mill is quiet, although the weaving shed is occupied by a small engineering concern. Hopefully it has some potential for light industrial re-use.

LOCATION: Midgley Road, Mytholmroyd

REF: CD 127

GRID REF: 015 263

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Mostly used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: There was a woollen mill here by 1850 with a small waterwheel fed by the waters of White Lee Clough. By 1857 there was a five storey mill, probably the building that stands at right angles to Midgley road. Adjacent is a later four storey stone building. There have been various extensions and additions, including a weaving shed. This was known by a separate name at one time. No sign of a chimney.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: On the whole the mill buildings appear to be in very good condition, and have been successfully subdivided into small units and workshops. Occupants include two joiners, a building contractor, cabinet maker, wholesale clothing business and a motor engineers. Interior of weaving shed has been modernised. Oldest building could have some potential for listing.

LOCATION: Portsmouth
REF: CD 59
GRID REF: 898 263
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Semi used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Located at the foot of Beater Clough, this as the highest mill surveyed in the main Calder Valley. Probably an early site, a cotton mill was certainly recorded here by 1850. A small, three storey, mid 19C building (now derelict) remains at the rear of the larger, late 19C, two and three storey main building. Circular chimney on the hillside above. Some parts of the site appear to have been demolished. Also, a number of brick built warehouses and workshops across Burnley road.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The main part of the site is partly used for leather tanning and there is a mill shop on the site. The older building at the rear is probably in danger of being pulled down.

Up-date 2014 - mill is now demolished, and houses being built.

                <text>NAME: LYDGATE MILL
LOCATION: Lydgate
REF: CD 47
GRID REF: 921 257
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Semi used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: The name suggests that this was the earliest mill site in this part of the Upper Calder. It is certainly recorded as a cotton mill before 1850. By the beginning of the 20C it had probably been converted to other uses, and today there is little evidence of a former textile mill. There is a small, four storey, mid 19C stone building and a few adjacent small buildings, and part of a brick built weaving shed.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Part of the site (mainly the former weaving shed) is used by a builder’s merchant. Otherwise little left to see.

REF: RY 18
GRID REF: 037 196
CLASSIFICATION: B
CONDITION: Mostly used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early-mid 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This was another cotton mill and was built at the beginning of the 19C. Parts of the mill possibly date back this far, although there have been a number of subsequent additions and alterations, eg upper storeys added. The west wing was rebuilt in 1870. The buildings are three and four storey stone built, with a two storey building along the river. The wheel house survives, although the water wheel has long since gone. Also the remains of a square, stone chimney. The dam is now semi overgrown, although interestingly it was brought back into use during the 1976 water shortage.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill has been used by a chemical firm since 1947, although their future here is uncertain. Parts of the buildings will probably need repairs and improvements for continued industrial use. However, the mill is of interest in that its buildings reflect its various stages of development, and it would be worth consideration for listing.

Photo taken c1985.. The occupier at this time was Pancreol, a division of Pan Britannica Industries (PBI) who produced garden chemicals, many of which are now banned. The most famous which is still in production is Baby Bio, although this was not produced at Ripponden.

LOCATION: Mill House

REF: RY 32

GRID REF: 049 227

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Semi used/derelict

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mainly mid-late 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This is probably the site of a very early scribbling or carding mill. A Mill House Mill was first recorded in 1787. It developed as a woollen mill and was converted to a dye works in the late 19C. The main mill building is a four storey, stone built affair (date stone 1864) built over the river. Surrounding it is a complex of narrow three storey and low level stone buildings and sheds that were probably added for the dyeing processes. Some of the site has been demolished.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: As well as some demolition, other parts are in a derelict condition, including the main mill building. Most of the site has been divided into small units, and some of these are used by a variety of small firms. However, there has been little effort to refurbish unused parts of the site, which may come under threat of demolition in future.

CONDITION: Fully used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: 20C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: The present three storey, stone built building adjacent to the site of Ripponden Mill has probably never been used for textiles manufacture. It was built after the original mill was destroyed by fire in 1929. This mill was built c1852 and was a cotton concern. Unlikely to have been a water powered site.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Most of the main building plus a modern workshop are used by a firm of iron founders. Part of the ‘mill’ is also occupied by an air filtration company.

LOCATION: Rochdale Road, Walsden

REF: CD8

GRID REF: 935 221

CLASSIFICATION: D

CONDITION: Mostly used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: One of the largest mills in the Todmorden area, a four storey, triple-gabled stone built main building with a small staircase tower placed centrally with a small clock feature. An extensive 24 light weaving shed is located to the south of the main building, along with an engine house. The chimney has disappeared, but was apparently over 200 ft high.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Most of the site appears to be used with a furniture/clothing warehouse and snooker centre occupying the main building, and a kitchens centre in the old weaving shed. These are good examples of mill re-use, particularly for a large mill such as this. Information from a mill survey carried out in 1984.
