                <text>NAME: LYDGATE MILL

LOCATION: Lydgate

REF: CD 47

GRID REF: 921 257

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Semi used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid – late 19C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: The name suggests that this was the earliest mill site in this part of the Upper Calder. It is certainly recorded as a cotton mill before 1850. By the beginning of the 20C it had probably been converted to other uses, and today there is little evidence of a former textile mill. There is a small, four storey, mid 19C stone building and a few adjacent small buildings, and part of a brick built weaving shed.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Part of the site (mainly the former weaving shed) is used by a builder’s merchant. Otherwise little left to see.

                <text>NAME: WATERSTALLS MILL

LOCATION: Bottomley

REF: CD1

GRID REF: 943 212

CLASSIFICATION: A

CONDITION: Ruins

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early-mid 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Perched high on the westerly facing hillside of Walsden Water, only the shell of this mill remains. There was originally an iron works here at the beginning of the 19C, but it was bought by the Fieldens and converted to a cotton mill c1834. A new mill pond was also constructed at this date. It long since ceased working – a victim of its isolated site. The remains of a three storey building, the wheel pit and race can be seen, as well as the three small dams above.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The Pennine climate is likely to continue to erode the ruins still further. The site is now part of rough grazing land, but reasonable access can be obtained.

                <text>NAME: ALBION MILL

LOCATION: Stackhills

REF: CD32

GRID REF: 939 241

CLASSIFICATION: D

CONDITION: Fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: There are various buildings on this site, including a fair example of a stone built, two storey mid 19C mill building. This has a later extension on the northern end. There is also a larger, late 19C triple gabled building with modern glass frontage, weaving sheds and a circular stone chimney. The site probably dates from around the 1840’s as a cotton weaving factory.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is now occupied by a firm of graphic arts suppliers. The early building is of some interest, and the site is adjacent to the canal towpath.

                <text>NAME: FRITHS MILL

LOCATION: Gauxholme

REF: CD22

GRID REF: 926 231

CLASSIFICATION: A and B

CONDITION: Part used/part demolished

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Site from late 18C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: An early water powered site. A mill was recorded here around 1795. It was rebuilt c1834, and probably covered both sides of Bacup Road (Dulesgate). A good example of an early-mid 19C mill building survives on the northern side. A three storey (and attic) stone building of simple rectangular design, with a few later adjoined buildings. Circular stone chimney on hillside above – probably original chimney. Across the road was the main site of this mill, now mostly demolished and cleared. It was substantially altered and extended in the 1870/80’s, and was a large cotton manufacturing concern. Only the 120ft plus circular stone chimney and brick built shed remain. Dam has been filled.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The early mill building is mostly used by an industrial firm, and is now known as St Aidans Works. It looks in reasonable condition and as one of the earliest surviving industrial buildings in this district it could be worthy of listing. The main site looks to have been demolished in recent years. New houses have been erected on part of the site, but the rest is becoming unsightly. The chimney remains a landmark.

LOCATION: Cragg Bottom

REF: CD133/134/135

GRID REF: 006 237

CLASSIFICATION: A

CONDITION: Ruins

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Situated in a heavily wooded gorge of Cragg Brook, these three ruins are very close together and difficult to tell apart. The remains of walls built into the valley side, a wheel pit (with ornamental wheel), race, small dam and weir and the site of a gasometer holder can be seen. The paper mill dates from the mid 18C. The other two were cotton mills. Cragg Mill burned down in 1894.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Historical and visitor potential of these remains of early water powered sites could be realised. However, there are problems of access, in particular the best remains are now part of a private garden, although they can be seen from a footpath. Also, unsightly scrap heap and tipping near the site of Castle Mill could be eradicated

LOCATION: Quarter mille NE of Wainstalls

REF: LD 3

GRID REF: 047 289

CLASSIFICATION: B

CONDITION: Fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A small stone built three storey building along Georgian lines, with a wheelhouse on the western end and a cottage extension at the other. The wheel house contains a 36ft diameter overshot water wheel, which remains intact. This probably replaced an earlier external wheel. The dam immediately above the mill is now mainly overgrown.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill has been much altered internally and is currently used as a mechanics’ workshop. It is a fine example of an early water powered mill whose appearance has changed very little in 150 years, and should merit listing. The condition of the water wheel has deteriorated and renovation by some interested party would be desirable. The mill is privately owned

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: There was probably a fulling mill in this vicinity as far back as the early 17C. A paper mill was constructed by the mid 18C, which grew into a large concern before being demolished in 1921. There are extensive ruins covering quite a large area by the brook – mainly walls and fallen masonry, which have become somewhat overgrown.

CONDITION: Empty

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A three storey stone built mill with a number of small extensions. The mill was first built c1818, but was seriously damaged by fire in 1867. Rebuilt in its present form. There is a picturesque dam just upstream and a good example of ‘double decker’ housing along the road above.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Empty at present, although it seems to have recently been used for craft workshops. The building appears to be in good condition and may have some potential for similar re-use.

GRID REF: 055 184

CLASSIFICATION: D

CONDITION: Mostly used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid 19C/20C

This part is a three storey, stone built building with a probable engine house. An extension (with tower) was added on the front (date stone 1919), and a further addition was built c1940. There is a circular stone chimney.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is owned by a firm of woollen manufacturers, who have been here since 1914. The chimney is a noticeable landmark in the landscape.

LOCATION: Stainland Road, Stainland

REF: BB 18

GRID REF: 080 195

CLASSIFICATION: D

CONDITION: Semi used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Located in the old hill top settlement of Stainland, the earliest part of this woollen mill is a three storey, stone building with date stone 1841. Built onto it is a long two storey building, and a similar building runs parallel although part of this has recently been demolished. Various other small late 19C buildings. Chimney has disappeared, but small mill pond remains in good condition.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill only seems to be used for storage and much of it is empty or derelict. The earliest building is in a particularly bad state of repair and requires considerable renovation. Possibly worth being listed to prevent demolition, which has already taken place elsewhere on the site.

GRID REF: 064 184

CLASSIFICATION: A and C

CONDITION: Semi-used/derelict/ruins

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid – late 19C (site earlier).

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This old site has a long and varied history stretching back to the 17C. Two fulling mills were recorded here in 1684, a paper mill was built in the 1750’s, and a scribbling and carding mill was recorded in 1800. A few walls, water courses and rubble can be seen among the undergrowth close to the present buildings – remainders of these early water powered mills. Two dams were constructed in the 1770’s and are still in reasonable condition. A steam engine was installed in 1859, and an impressive circular stone chimney rises above the site from the adjacent hillside. Paper making ceased in 1910. Parts of the site appear to have been demolished and cleared, and there is a derelict mid–late 19C building, probably a weaving shed. A few fairly small stone buildings also occupy the site, including a mid 19C two storey example.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The remaining buildings on the site are used by a small textiles firm. The derelict building is now probably beyond repair. However, the site is of historical interest and the attractively positioned chimney is worthy of conservation.

LOCATION: Beestonely

REF: BB 10

GRID REF: 067 198

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Mostly used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mainly early 20C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This mill has been under the same ownership of woollen manufacturers since its original construction c1830. It was rebuilt in 1908 – 1909 and consists of a long, two and three storey stone building with some additions. A square stone chimney is still used and probably predates the present mill buildings. A row of cottages is situated immediately below the mill next to the brook. At one time a mill stream ran from the dam at the rear of the present Barkisland Mill (see BB 9).

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is still used for woollen manufacturing although parts of it seem disused and one section is derelict. Hopefully, the mill will continue to be used in some form.

                <text>NAME: BOWERS MILLS

LOCATION: Stubbing Wood

REF: BB 11

GRID REF: 070 202

CLASSIFICATION: B and C

CONDITION: Fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C (site earlier).

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This is another site in the valley with a long history. An early fulling mill was situated here, which changed to corn briefly in the 1770’s when a stone building was erected. It was recorded as a worsted mill in 1807 and had a 16ft diameter water wheel. Today, the site is a small complex of buildings. The oldest part is a three storey building close to the dam – this is the old mill (early – mid 19C). A larger, five storey stone building with a square tower was built in 1864, and a steam engine installed at this date. The circular, 100ft stone chimney is still used, as is the large dam. The weaving shed is noteworthy for its twin towers – an unusual decorative feature.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill has been run by the same family since 1861, and still manufactures textiles. A fine example of an integrated mill with many interesting features. A footpath runs through the mill.
