It consists of mostly two storey, stone and brick buildings with sky lighted roofs. Circular brick chimney. There are remains of older stone walls and this may have been the site of Pudsey Mill, which was manufacturing bobbins before 1850. It was possibly water powered and there is still a small dam and weir upstream. It was converted and rebuilt to a dye works in the late 19C. PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is now fully used by a rubber manufacturing company. The chimney stands out as a landmark, but little now of historical interest. Photo taken c1985. Demolished in the late 19C. There are now few traces of the mill, which was located below the still discernable dam. The remains of a second, smaller dam can be seen higher up the wooded hillside, along with a lengthy race. Possible remains of a chimney. DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Just downstream from Valley Mills there was probably an earlier water-powered mill here. The present buildings date from the 1850’s – two large, four storey stone buildings of slightly different design, the lower being double gabled and probably slightly later in date. Tall, octagonal stone chimney still used. Small weaving shed and larger building that was probably built for the dyeing and finishing processes which were introduced here in the late 19C. Large dam still in good condition, and cottages on main road above. PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is used by a firm of cotton dyers, although not all the buildings appear to be completely in use. Buildings look in good condition and, with their attractive setting in this wooded valley, could be designated as a Listed Building. Photo taken c1985. There was originally an iron works here at the beginning of the 19C, but it was bought by the Fieldens and converted to a cotton mill c1834. A new mill pond was also constructed at this date. It long since ceased working – a victim of its isolated site. The remains of a three storey building, the wheel pit and race can be seen, as well as the three small dams above. PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The Pennine climate is likely to continue to erode the ruins still further. The site is now part of rough grazing land, but reasonable access can be obtained. A simple two storey stone built building, little more than an extension of domestic cottage architecture. A small square stone chimney is built into the roof (probably shortened). A later 19C extension by Rochdale Road. A woollen mill was recorded here in 1794 and before 1850 it became one of the Fieldens’ outlying factories. It was sold in the 1870’s and subsequently had a variety of uses. The dam has gone and is now covered by allotments. PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is currently only used for storage purposes and part of it has become derelict.
