It was later rebuilt and enlarged – date stone 1868 on a three storey stone building along the road. This building has a few interesting architectural details – eg large, arched windows with ornate stone hoods. A five storey spinning mill building behind has been demolished. However, an engine house and octagonal stone chimney remain. There is a dyeworks immediately adjacent – mid-late 19C buildings with some modern additions. Dam upstream. PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The dyeworks is still used and the remaining main building has been subdivided and provides premises for a home improvement and kitchen centre, and a photographer’s studio. It was erected c1800 and was originally a very small mill. It was enlarged in the 1850’s and survived as a cotton concern until the 1930’s. The square, stone chimney has survived. The dam remains just above the site and a derelict weaving shed can be seen. Small terraced row of houses next to the site. PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is part used by a scrap merchant, which together with the derelict nature of the remaining buildings creates an undesirable eyesore. The chimney stands out however, as a landmark and could be preserved if it is reasonably safe. Photo taken c1985. Spring Mill was a cotton mill which ceased operation in about 1930 when competition from the Far East made it non- viable. It was built by Mike Wadsworth’s great grandfather who had the expertise and a partner by the name of Scott who provided the funds. It was later rebuilt and enlarged – date stone 1868 on a three storey stone building along the road. This building has a few interesting architectural details – eg large, arched windows with ornate stone hoods. A five storey spinning mill building behind has been demolished. However, an engine house and octagonal stone chimney remain. There is a dyeworks immediately adjacent – mid-late 19C buildings with some modern additions. Dam upstream. PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The dyeworks is still used and the remaining main building has been subdivided and provides premises for a home improvement and kitchen centre, and a photographer’s studio. PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: This mill has remained in the hands of a small family business, still engaged in woollen and worsted manufacture. Most of the site is now covered by relatively modern brick and stone sheds and warehouses. One interesting feature is a small, three storey brick building, a rarity in this area. This mill was another of the Fieldens’ outlying factories, and there is some evidence of an older water-powered mill – weir, sluices, site of dam, part of a race and foundation walls. PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Part of the site is used by an engineering firm, but much of the main mill building is semi-derelict and will need considerable refurbishment. Pennine Heritage commissioned a survey of the condition of mills in the area. Later brick extension and brick chimney. Weaving shed near to the canal was built in the 1870’s. However, a significant part of the site has been demolished, including another weaving shed and two warehouses. PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The remaining part of the mill is fully used by a textiles firm, who were also based at Birks Mill, Walsden (see HPC00165) until recently. Photo taken c1985.
