Initially the new club was called the Calder Camera Club but following a certain amount of confusion regarding its location, after a couple of years, the name was changed to Hebden Bridge Camera Club. Originally the Club met over Horner’s Barber’s shop on Market Street and subsequently in a room over the Council Offices. We now meet at the Masonic Hall, Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge.

The Club is a member of the Yorkshire Photographic Union (YPU) and through this is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. This allows us to participate in competitions, exhibitions and various seminars, both at County and National levels. In this context the Club hosted the YPU’s annual “Assembly and Exhibition” in 1973 and again in 1982.

From September to April the Club meets weekly, the principal activities being a bi-monthly print and projected images competition and lectures on photography-related subjects. We also take part in occasional inter-club competitions. During the summer we meet once per fortnight and these meetings usually takes the form of a walk around places of local interest. The Club also holds an annual print exhibition which is gaining in popularity each year.

With the advent of digital imaging and the ease with which high quality prints can now be produced, there has been a resurgence in amateur photography and this has been reflected the growing interest in the Club’s activities and in new membership. However, we are still a relatively small club and new members are always welcome. So if you’re a novice wishing to improve your technique, or an experienced photographer prepared to test your ability in competition, why not come along and sample a few meetings – expect a friendly welcome.</text>

<text>On the 21st of June, 1912, the 2.45 from Rochdale and Liverpool approached the infamous Charlestown curve at about 40 miles per hour and left the line, killing four passengers.

Although off the rails, the train was carried for a further 100 yards "tearing up the rails as if they were wire". The engine ploughed into the embankment on the North side of the cutting.

The first carriage was ripped off its bogies, but stayed upright. The second carriage took most of the impact and was described as "smashed into matchwood". It was in this carriage that the deaths and most of the injuries occurred. The remaining carriages were all damaged with broken windows and splintered floorboards.

This photographic project, supported financially by Hebden Royd Town Council, provides us with an invaluable record, looking as it does at the changing face of Hebden Bridge and the surrounding district, over the last fifty years or so.

Until March 2014 this collection of photographic prints was housed in the Hebden Bridge Library.

We are indebted to the members of the Hebden Bridge Camera Club for all their efforts in the past, now, and in the future.

<text>The Camera Club was formed in the summer of 1952 from a special interest section of the Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society.

<text>We have this photo dated 1961, but Jonathan Greenwood comments: “I have a copy of this print because the building in the centre used to belong to my great grandparents, Thomas (Tommy) & Harriet Louisa (Louie) Knight, who ran it as a bakery. They both died in the mid 1950’s. The glass houses were used by Tommy to grow tomatoes during the summer months.

I don’t know the history of the building after they left, which I believe was in the late 1940’s/early 1950’s but there appears to be stock on display in the window, so presumably it remained some kind of retailers afterwards unless the image is from when they lived there?

The locomotive is in the earlier British Railways livery introduced in 1948/9 and has was is known as the “begging dog” symbol on its tender, also the carriages are in the earlier carmine & cream livery (known as blood & custard) which was later replaced with an all over dark maroon livery in 1956 along with a different tender logo.

Just a theory but I would think this image dates from the 1950s.”

<text>The Camera Club was formed in the summer of 1952 from a special interest section of the Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society.

<text>The Camera Club was formed in the summer of 1952 from a special interest section of the Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society.

<text>The last service at Cragg Vale Methodist Church took place in September 1971, and was conducted by Rev E.C. Matkovich.

From a newspaper article dated 19/9/1971 we learn:

The chapel was built in 1835, but prior to this services were held in a building at Higher Cragg and later in a cottage at Smithy Stead.

The opening sermons were preached by Rev J. Farrar and Rev. W. Calson. At the time the chapel was built there no road ran through Cragg Vale, and what are now fields were dense woods. From an old manuscript we learn that “so recently at the time of the building of Cragg Wesleyan Chapel the road from Bottoms was embowered in trees on each side, so that on a dark night it was like going through a tunnel.”
