Title A name given to the resource Royds Hall, the Justice Room - HLS06070 Subject The topic of the resource Buildings, Hall Description An account of the resource Slide 3 - 'Squire Leedes' as he was familiarly called was a noted magistrate of George the Third's time and sat to administer justice in a building within his own grounds, aview of which is now shown. The broad flight of steps outside, and the 'Justice chair' within, are unmistakable signs of the ancient use of the building. Many humourous tales are told of the 'Squire' who seems to have been a character. As an illustration of the familiar style of dispensing 'justice' in those days the following story is related. An old man in Carr Lane named Pearson who had lost his donkey and having got wind of the missing animal, and also of the thief, went up to Royds Hall to consult the Squire as to whether he should 'fetch law' to get the animal back. 'Law! Law!' said the Squire, ' there's no law for a donkey!' 'Isn't there?' said old Pearson 'Well then I'll help mysen to't best I can find on't common as I go hoam ', and was making his way out. 'Stop, stop, Robert, I'll give thee a warrant', called the Squire - steps that no doubt saved him some trouble afterwards. The last of the family as before mentioned Edward Rooke - Leedes, owing to his financial difficulties was obliged to sell his estates. He died in despair by his own hand in 1788, when Messrs. Hird, Dawson, Preston, Jarrett and Hardy purchased the whole estate and became the founders of the wide-famed Low Moor Ironworks. Royds Hall afterwards became the residence of the Dawsons. The last member of the family, who occupied it till her death was Miss Eliza Dawson who died in May 1875. It has been occupied since by various members and partners of Low Moor Ironworks. This is probably the most ancient part of the building, of the Tudor or Plantagenet era. Such a house as this, should have it's haunted room, and this is not wanting at Woodsome where 'Rimington's Closet', a room upstairs once used for muniments, was long haunted by the ghost of James Rimmington, a steward of the house and a just steward as far as is known, who died in 1679. But the greatest curiosities are the ancient picture boards hung on diminutive cranes in the gallery, so as to admit of their being turned round to examine either side. These are painted on both sides, and represent portraits of different members of the Kaye family and also the armorial bearings of the families of Yorkshire akin to the Kayes. Title A name given to the resource Wood Lane Hall, Sowerby - HLS06048 Subject The topic of the resource Architecture, Buildings, Hall, Places, Sowerby Description An account of the resource Slide 1 - This is one of the most picturesque old Houses in the parish of Halifax, and seems to have escaped external alterations evident in all others, according to the varying tastes of the owners. It is situated in the Calder Valley on a steep hillside, mid way between Sowerby Bridge and the ancient Village of Sowerby. The sheltered situation of the building, bowered in trees and away from the busy haunts of man, makes an ideal old homestead. Its outward appearance is suggestive of a house with a history, and it is a striking illustration of how our forefathers understood the art of building. Observe the graceful circular window of the porch chamber. On the headstones of the door are the initials of the builder, Richard Dearden, and also of his wife Elizabeth, and the date 1649. He it was who renovated the old house of the Medieval period and cased the old framework with stone, thereby giving to posterity the handsome exterior we see at the present time. In the interior may be seen still in position, the crooked timbers of the medieval building.Wood Lane Hall was purchased by the Dearden family in 1613, from Isaac Hopkinson, but up to 1586 from the earliest times on record it had belonged to the Woods, who probably took their name from the same. Few buildings are visible, and a the top of the village, beneath the shadow of a magnificent old elm tree, are the old village stocks.
