It stands on the brow of an elevated ridge overlooking Ledston village and commanding a fine prospect of the valleys of the Aire and Calder, and in an easterly direction, the open plain of York, including the towers of York Minster and the hills above Selby. It then came to the De Vescy family by whom it was granted in the 13th Century to the knightly family of Goldsborough, who derived their name from the Township. The room in which tradition says John Tillotson was born is on the ground floor, and is beautifully paneled in black oak. Over the fireplace is a representation in plaster of a battle scene, and on the stone mantle piece are cut the initials J. T. 1630, which thus commemorates the date of his birth. Such in brief, is what we have very imperfectly been able to show and describe of Gilling Castle, which well deserves a visit. Its ivy clad walls, its gardens glowing with colour, its many peacocks sunning themselves along the terraces, the distant views, and the masses of deep wood crowning the nearby heights, make a series of pictures that will not soon be forgotten. Probably there is nothing more complete in original design and workmanship in present preservation. It occupies on the main floor the south portion of the east side. Features in four materials combine to make the Great chamber a complete work of art. Above the oak wainscoting is a frieze of forest design of painted heraldic work. The wainscoting is nearly twelve feet high.
