Mr H Speight, in Upper Wharfedale says, 'On the edge of Weston Moor, to the east of Whin Castle, is the old forest lodge of Dog Park, a seventeenth Century home of a branch of the Vavasours of Weston. There is a tradition that it was shelled during the Civil Wars by the soldiers of Cromwell, and before the owners had time to get their goods away. Some old pewter plates were long afterwards turned up in land adjoining, and are now at Weston Hall. For more than five centuries the house has been the ancestral home of the Vavasours, and was retained in the male line until 1883 when by the death of William Vavasour Esq., it descended to the Rev. John Carter of Lincoln, vicar of Weston who married Ellen, the only sister and heiress of William Vavasour. Ascending the staircase we are shown in one of the rooms on the upper storey, a massive carved oak four poster bed, dating from the time of Queen Elizabeth, also an old oak chest at the foot of the same. A fireplace in this room dates from the time when the building was erected in the time of the Otes family, the first recorded owners of Shibden, about 1450. They were succeeded by the Saviles. The next family of note were the Waterhouses. On the left of this passage is the most interesting apartment in the building, the central hall or 'House Body' which occupies the centre between the two gables of the older portion of the house, and retains both within and without the characteristics which must have marked it soon after its erection. The room is a square apartment, open to the roof, and lighted by a stone window which bears some very interesting specimens of stained glass. It was put in by Robert Savile about 1504, a former owner. The Central Hall is furnished with old English furniture, in keeping with the place. The dining table dates from the time of Queen Elizabeth. The table is narrow, as compared with most present day dining tables. The reason for this was that that the family and their guests sat on one side of the table only, and were served by the attendants from the opposite side. A fine collection of portraits of the Lister family is also hung in the Hall. Title A name given to the resource Sprotbrough Church (Tower West End) - HLS06021 Subject The topic of the resource Architecture, Church Description An account of the resource Slide 13 - For nothing has the village more frequently been mentioned than for its Cross, the site of which, opposite the west end of the church, is still preserved, or rather the following singular piece of ancient rhyme, which was engraved upon a plate of brass affixed to it taken from the M.S. of Hugh Fitz-William 'Who is so hungry and liste will eate Let him come to Sprotburgh to his meate, And for a night and for a day His horse shall have both corn and hay And no maine shall aske where he goith away' This cross was pulled down in the year 1520. According to a record, it is stated that it was Sir John Fitz-William who lived here in the reign of Henry V (1413-1422) who caused a cross to be erected not far from the Church, with the lines as just given engraved in brass upon it. It would seem from this that the cross was only allowed to remain in existence for about 100 years, before it was destroyed. Vandalism was perpetrated even in those times as well as in our own!
