Title A name given to the resource Portrait of sir George Wombwell, Newburgh Priory - HLS05876 Subject The topic of the resource Arts & Crafts, Buildings, Hall, Painting Description An account of the resource Slide 6 - In the same name and family through a succession of Viscounts, these estates continued till1825, when Lady Anne, second daughter and eventual heiress of Henry, last Earl of Fauconberg, married Sir George Wombwell, second Baronet and thus brought the Newburgh estate in to the Wombwell family. The late Baronet George O. Wombwell (shown) is his son. It may be of interest to add, that the present owner of Newburgh is a Crimedan veteran and took part in the famous 'Charge of the Six Hundred' in 1854, immortalized by Tennyson. Two horses were shot from under him yet he escaped unhurt. One of the chargers he took to the Crimea, he brought back to England. This was kept at Newburgh until it's death and is buried in the park, a stone monument being erected over the remains. This vault is situated at the top of a flight of steps at the upper part of the house. On a board is the following lettering 'Cromwell's Vault In this vault are Cromwell's bones, brought here it is believed by his daughter, Mary, Countess of Fauconberg at the Restoration, when his bones were disinterred from Westminster Abbey' The late King Edward, when Prince of Wales, on one of his visits to Newburgh Priory, showed great interest in this vault and after inspecting it one day, laughingly remarked, 'Look here Sir George , I shall never be satisfied about this until you open the vault. After seeing all hopes of the sovereignty continuing in her own family, cut off by the death of her father, she is said to have exerted all her endeavours for the restoration of the monarchy. Thomas, his grandson, succeeded as Viscount Fauconberg, who nmarried first, Mildred, daughter of Viscount Castleton, and second, in 1657, Mary, third daughter of Oliver Cromwwell. There were great national rejoicings at this marriage. He soon after gave the estates to his nephew Sir William Belsaye. Thomas Belsaye his Descendant was created Viscount Fauconberg by Charles 1 immediately before the Civil Wars. When these broke out he took the King's part, and had an important command at Marston Moor, after which he fled to the Continent and died soon after (1652) but his remains were interred in Coxwold Church. The situation of Marske is strikingly picturesque at any season, but especially so when the glorious summer sunshine floods the verdant slopes, towering scars, and overhanging woods, which hem in the village on all sides.
