In romantic beauty it can hold its own with any other Yorkshire dale. The river being more confined between steep banks, rushes through rocky ravines and over high precipices and thus making it a more impetuous and turbulent stream than most of the other Yorkshire rivers, and giving it the character of a mountain torrent rather than a smooth flowing river. A good point for viewing the scenery of the Upper Swale is to be obtained from the top of Whitcliffe Scaur and rendered famous as the site of the extraordinary leap and still more remarkable escape of a hunter named Robert Willance in the year 1606, whose horse ran away and precipitated both itself and its rider to the bottom of the Scar. The horse was killed on the spot but Willance receiving no injury beyond a broken leg. The four miles from Richmond to Marske through woods and meadows, and under beetling cliffs are a happy introduction to the sterner beauties that succeed. It was in the chantry of Saint Andrew's in the aisle of the north transept that was the family burial place, and here yet stands a fine altar-tomb, whereon a knight in plate-armour, showing the arms of a Markenfield lies, with his wife at his side. It is doubtless from the fact of its being so isolated, and far removed from the busy haunts of men, that it has escaped demolition or any great change to the present day. It is the finest example of a knightly family's 14th century Manor -House in the northern counties. The site was not a commanding one, but it was well defended by a moat, broad and steep, which still holds water. Across the stone bridge which has replaced the old drawbridge stands the Gate-house. The crypt has been converted by the present owner into a Chapel. The roof is vaulted in stone, and dates at least from the 15th Century, or possibly earlier. Here she was born in 1682. She seems to have lived in high estate at Ledston, and her work there was the completion of the gardens and beautifying the interiors of the house, She was founder of the orphanage at Ledsham. Lady Betty died Jan 2nd. 1739, aged 58 years and was buried at Ledsham Church where a fine monument is to be seen. In the room known as "Lady Betty Hasting's Room" is a fine panelled oaken mantelpiece, bearing the date 1588, and the initials W.W, and E.W., which refer to members of the Witham family. This ancient woodwork for some reasons or other appears to have been hidden from sight for more than a century, and was only restored in 1904, being stripped of its thick layers of paint revealing a unique specimen of 16th Century carving in a splendid state of preservation. Another interesting art treasure in this room is the life-size oil painting of Lady Betty Hastings painted in 1709 when that noble Lady would be about 28 years of age. He adorned them with a profusion of statuary of which a few specimens still remain. Sir John Lewis was raised to the Baronetcy in 1660 and died in 1671. He erected and endowed an hospital at Ledsham for the maintenance of ten aged poor people, who by his will are required religiously to observe the Sabbath day, and to be present at Church in time for Divine Service and sermon.
