<text>The co-operative movement in Todmorden started in the early 19th Century and expanded rapidly for the next 100 years. From one small store, the movement grew until there were general stores in every part of the area. The main store was in Dale Street and here furniture, carpets, millinery, drapers, gents' clothing and coal could be obtained.

The 'Co-op' movement concerned itself with educational matters so when the town received it s charter in July 1896, they presented the town with their library of 8,000 books, and also presented the present library building to the town.

Recent years have seen many amalgamations with other companies, and unfortunately, our local Co-op has suffered. The days of co-op checks and divi are no more.</text>

<text>The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. An Act of Parliament in 1906 allowed the Corporation to provide a bus service for the town. Four buses were ordered and on January 1st 1907, the first bus travelled along the Walsden Valley. In July 1908 it was decided to continue the bus service, but it was only in the 1920s that more routes were opened up, one route to Lumbutts, another to Oxenhope. In 1931 the service became a joint undertaking with L.M.S. Railway, and later, British Rail. In recent years (1993) it has become part of Yorkshire Rider Ltd.</text>

<text><strong>Road paving, 1911</strong> - The operation of motor buses by the Corporation helped to bring about improvements in the surfacing and repair of local roads. The increasing presence of motor transport in the late 1900s was responsible for the disintegration of the surface of the roads, particularly in wet weather. The Motor Bus Committee paid out substantial amounts of compensation to people who had clothing splashed with mud thrown up by the bus wheels (and to people whose dogs or hens had been killed while scavenging on the dusty surfaces). In 1910, the Council embarked on a programme of street improvements including the paving, with granite setts, of the main approach roads. The first tender was let to local contractor Benjamin Lumb for the length between the gas works, Millwood, and the Town Hall. The length between Gauxholme and Ewood Lane was begun in May 1911, the contractors being Riley Bros. &amp; Hartley. In this picture, the work is being carried out at Waterside (near the present entrance to Safeway's). One of Caleb Hoyle's wagons can be seen carrying empty skips to his mill at Walsden.</text>
