Blackshaw Head Methodist Church - MCH00157

Blackshaw Chapel, Blackshawhead
Description
An account of the resource
"The church at the heart of the community"
We aim to serve the local community in whatever ways we can, as both a spiritual and a practical resource.
The chapel provides a useful suite of community rooms which we make available for community events such as the village fete and local history club exhibitions, and we hire out space for both regular clubs and meetings and one-off events and private parties.
The chapel also hosts Blackshaw Parish Council's meetings and provides a performance space for Colden School.
In the porch is our Christmas manger, which is well-used all year round as the village's collection point for donations for two local food-banks.
The chapel is a spiritual base for celebrating and remembering all the landmarks of personal and civic life, and provides further ministry to the community through its beautiful graveyard."

An account of the resource
A lifelong resident of Todmorden, Thomas has always had a strong interest in the history of Todmorden and the surrounding area, as can be seen in this collection. His interest in photography started over 50 years ago; he became a member of Todmorden Camera Club, joining in 1971. He worked for the Todmorden Co-op from 1950 to 1971, then for Todmorden Borough Council, until local government changes in 1974, when he joined the West Yorkshire County Council until that was abolished in 1986. Finally, from 1986 until his retirement he worked for Calderdale MBC.

Description
An account of the resource
Blackshawhead Chapel was built in 1815 by the Methodists of nearby Heptonstall to serve this hilltop village.
The Chapel was extended a few years later by the addition of a Sunday School, which for many years was the only form of education available to village children. The building has undergone several renovations, and today provides a place for the church to meet and worship, and also a suite of rooms which the community can use. The building is being gradually renovated, as funding permits, to improve the quality of the facilities available. We have recently refitted the upstairs hall and installed a stairlift, and renovated the ground floor rooms to make them energy efficient. From Blackshaw Head Church web-site.

Hebden Bridge Local History Society
Description
An account of the resource
The Hebden Bridge Local History Society was formed in 1949 and is a section of the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society which celebrated its hundredth anniversary in 2005.
The Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.
The Society's archive and library is housed at The Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month.
Donations to the archive are welcomed. Contributions of photos and documents, even from the recent past.
A catalogue of the Society's is available on their website..
One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.
Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.
