Derek spent his early life in Old Town Hebden Bridge, where his father was the Engine Tenter (Steam Engineer) for Mitchell Bros, who were wool washers and combers. Derek attended Old Town School then Calder High School, after which he did an engineering apprenticeship at John Pickles and Son, Mytholm. Later he worked at Broadbent Machine Tools, Mytholmroyd, installing and servicing their equipment all over the world. Eventually he worked for Chevron Overseas Exploration Co. in various locations, the last one being 4 years in Sudan. His hobbies include gardening, old photographs and family history.

Undated postcard but Calder High School, top centre, is under construction and although work on the school started before the war, it did not open until 1950, it was the West Riding's first comprehensive school. Redman's Scarbottom Mill, with its mill dam, is centre right of the picture, to the left of that Thornber's poultry sheds on the Elphaborough site.

In the foreground is the Moderna factory and above on the right Calder High School which had opened in 1950. The new housing estate of pre-fabricated Airey houses to the left of centre in the photo is the extension to the area known as Banksfields (Victorian terrace housing.) These homes were built to help with the post-war housing crisis and were assembled on site.
