The topic of the resource
In the 1980s much of the industrial heritage of the South Pennine area was being changed or in some cases lost. Pennine Heritage commissioned a survey of the condition of mills in the area. Photographs were taken when the survey was carried out, and the survey results have been added to those images in this collection.

Description
An account of the resource
NAME: FORD MILL
LOCATION: Near Totties, Holmfirth
REF: HU 36
GRID REF: 155 095
CLASSIFICATION: D
CONDITION: Semi used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C/20C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A large mill site to be found, unusually, on an upland plateau between the Holme and Jackson Bridge Dike valleys. The mill was built c1862 for woollen yarn spinning and some stone built parts may survive from this date, as well as the square stone chimney slightly above the main site. There is a whole collection of later extensions and additions – mainly one and two storey stone built, plus a part demolished three storey brick building. Woollen spinning continued here until the 1950’s.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Some of the site appears to have been subdivided and is occupied by a few small concerns. However, there was very little activity when visited. The size of the site and its inaccessible location makes its future somewhat uncertain, and further demolition may occur.
