Buildings, Chimney, Chimneys, Holmfirth, Mill, Mills, Places, Washpit Mills
NAME: WASHPIT MILLS
LOCATION: Washpit
REF: HU 21
GRID REF: 143 067
CLASSIFICATION: B and C
CONDITION: Fully used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid 19C – 20C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Situated just above Green Lane Mill, this small industrial complex is set amongst green fields and farmland. The site dates from c1810 but was rebuilt around 1840. Dating from this period is a four storey (plus attic) stone building along Georgian lines with an adjoining narrow three storey part at the top end of the site. Various other buildings have been added to the site, including a large double gabled mill building (mid-late 19C) and relatively modern weaving sheds. The base of a demolished stone chimney can be seen. However the old mill engine remains in situ. Large dam in good condition.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is still used for textile manufacturing – principally spinning – despite its fairly isolated position. The site provides good examples of mill building of varying ages.

Underbank Mill - HPC00255
Buildings, Dunford Road, Holmfirth, Mill, Mills, Places, Underbank Mill
NAME: UNDERBANK MILL
LOCATION: Dunford Road, Underbank
REF: HU 18
GRID REF: 146 074
CLASSIFICATION: D
CONDITION: Mostly used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Situated on the valley side of Ribbleden Clough, this was unlikely to have been a water powered site, although there is a small dam. Near to this is a fine Georgian/early Victorian type mill building, erected c1835, four storey stone built with a small bell tower. The mill was enlarged in the 1850’s and another four storey building of similar size and design was constructed. Just above the mill is an early square stone chimney. Later workshops added to site.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill closed down about ten years ago and has been subdivided into a number of small light industrial and storage units. The two main buildings and chimney remain virtually unaltered and should be considered for listing.

NAME: GREEN LANE MILL
LOCATION: Washpit
REF: HU 20
GRID REF: 145 068
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Fully used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A three storey stone built mill with loading bays placed centrally at the front. A woollen mill was recorded at Green Lane, Bottom in 1809, and it was a water powered site. The wheel was probably located in the basement at the western end of the building. Small mill race is visible.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is now used by a small textile firm producing home weaving kits. When visited, repairs were being made to the roof, so continued use is likely.

Buildings, Cartwoth, Dover Mill, Holmfirth, Mill, Mills, Places
NAME: DOVER MILL
LOCATION: Cartworth
REF: HV 19
GRID REF: 145 070
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Derelict
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid 19C/early 20C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Located in an attractive setting this is quite a large site with buildings of various dates. A fulling mill probably stood around here, and it was first recorded as a woollen mill in 1812. When visited, the oldest remaining part is mid 19C – two and three storey building with some later extensions. Also a number of later stone and brick buildings, a tall square stone chimney and a large dam (almost empty). The mill was converted to a dyeworks by the turn of this century. Gutted by fire in 1959. Cottages downstream.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill appears to have been little used since the fire and much of it has been demolished and cleared. The surviving buildings are in poor condition and complete demolition seems the most likely fate for this site.

LOCATION: Dunford Road, Holmfirth
REF: HU 16
GRID REF: 143 081
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: fully used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Situated close to the centre of Holmfirth at the foot of Ribbleden Clough, this site dates back to the first decade of the 19C. It was later rebuilt and enlarged – date stone 1868 on a three storey stone building along the road. This building has a few interesting architectural details – eg large, arched windows with ornate stone hoods. A five storey spinning mill building behind has been demolished. However, an engine house and octagonal stone chimney remain. There is a dyeworks immediately adjacent – mid-late 19C buildings with some modern additions. Dam upstream.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The dyeworks is still used and the remaining main building has been subdivided and provides premises for a home improvement and kitchen centre, and a photographer’s studio. Engine house in poor condition

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Built next to the river near the fire station, there was probably a woollen mill here by 1830 (probably under a different name). It was rebuilt in 1865 – the main building being a four storey stone built of a similar design to Ribbleden Mill (see HV 16). Adjoining office buildings at front and later two storey buildings/sheds next to and across the river. Modern steel chimney.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: This site has long been used for dyeing and finishing, and appears to be still fully used for this purpose. Most of the buildings in good condition.

Buildings, Chimney, Chimneys, Ford Mill, Holmfirth, Mill, Mills, Places
NAME: FORD MILL
LOCATION: Near Totties, Holmfirth
REF: HU 36
GRID REF: 155 095
CLASSIFICATION: D
CONDITION: Semi used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C/20C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A large mill site to be found, unusually, on an upland plateau between the Holme and Jackson Bridge Dike valleys. The mill was built c1862 for woollen yarn spinning and some stone built parts may survive from this date, as well as the square stone chimney slightly above the main site. There is a whole collection of later extensions and additions – mainly one and two storey stone built, plus a part demolished three storey brick building. Woollen spinning continued here until the 1950’s.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Some of the site appears to have been subdivided and is occupied by a few small concerns. However, there was very little activity when visited. The size of the site and its inaccessible location makes its future somewhat uncertain, and further demolition may occur.

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid – late 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This was the site of the manorial corn mill, which moved here from Holmfirth in the early 14C. Fulling was also carried out and in 1780 a scribbling engine was installed – one of the earliest in the Holme Valley area. Part of the old mill apparently still survives and houses the works canteen. Also the old mill race can be clearly seen running across the fields. Site known at this time as Ing Nook Mill. Present main mill building dates from the mid 19C – four storey, stone built in the typical style of that period. Number of smaller outbuildings of similar or later date, weaving shed and modern buildings on the site. The square stone chimney is set above the mill.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is still used for textiles manufacture, producing worsted cloth. The site is of historical interest.

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid 19C/20C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A large industrial site in the valley bottom, consisting mainly of extensive, modern low-level buildings. However, parts of the older mill here survive – notably a three storey, double gabled stone building (mid 19C) close to the large dam. Later additions around this building, including a small engine house and a tall, circular brick chimney (date stone 1911). Also weaving sheds. A water-powered mill seems likely to have been in existence on this site by the 1820’s, but little or no evidence remains.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is now fully used by a large dyeing and finishing company, the interior of the old building having been converted and modernised for this purpose. The dam is also used for angling.
