Description
An account of the resource
The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. IMAGES ARE NOT FOR SALE – Please, do not remove the watermark or strip the metadata, thank you. Historic Homes of Yorkshire collection
Description
An account of the resource
This Album contains images with notes on the Historic Homes of Yorkshire, a series of lectures first given to the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society by Mr. George Hepworth around 1916. An architect by profession, in 1894 he was a founder member of the Brighouse Photographic Society, and became a much sort after photographic artist and lanternist (someone who operates a magic lantern). He achieved wide popularity with his book 'Brighouse, its Scenery and Antiquities'; as only a 100 copies were published it has become something of a collectors item. The lectures take the form of a guided tour of the properties, and the language of the original notes has been maintained.

See Exhibit

Hazlewood Castle - HLS05888

Description
An account of the resource
Slide 1 - Hazlewood, the old baronial residence of the Vavasours, lies three miles west of Tadcaster in a well wooded park. Domesday Book is the first record of the existence of Hazlewood. It was then a thickly wooded manor, whose sylvan character is still faithfully represented by its name.
It has been the seat of the Vavasours from the time of Domesday until 1908 when the castle and estates were sold. Concerning the fabric of Hazlewood Castle we know but little, less indeed than we know of the family who held it continuously for more than 800 years. It is recorded that in 1289 Hazlewood was changed from a Hall into a Castle of the Baron. One of the Vavasours (Sir William) had a license in 1289 from Edward 1 to embattle Hazlewood.

Historic images of Calderdale from the 1950s to 1980s
Description
An account of the resource
Images of Calderdale in B&W taken ca. 1950 - ca. 1980
Donald Taylor was born in Hebden Bridge, later moving to Heptonstall where he lived with his wife, Ellen, at No. 42 Northgate for 53 years. He loved the countryside and was a keen walker and always took with him his favourite Pentax camera, which he won in a photography competition. He worked as a cutter and tailor for many years at Astins in Hebden Bridge. During the Second World War he spent four years in a tank regiment, where he trained as a wireless operator and was involved in the campaign in Africa and then Italy including action in Monte Cassino. Donald's photos are well-known and several were used to illustrate 'South Pennine Park', a book by his neighbour, historian Herbert Collins. Donald died in 2007 at the age of 85.
