Work on what is now the car park at Brook Street. The post office is still situated in the building shown here on the left of the shot. The now demolished cinema visible through the second arch of the railway viaduct with the market hall to the right of the arch. The nine arch Grade II listed viaduct carrying the Manchester-Leeds railway across the town centre was built in 1840 by the eponymous Manchester & Leeds Railway Company.

Handloom Weaver c.1900, Hebden Bridge. - WSC00161
Hebden Bridge, Men at work, Wadsworth, Weaver, handloom
"The decline of handloom weaving was a long process and it was not until the 1830s that power-loom weaving began to seriously displace the hand loom weavers. After 1841 each national census for Hebden Bridge shows a shrinking number of handloom weavers. The handloom weavers' cottages were increasingly abandoned as families left the area, or moved from the 'tops' into the valley bottom to find work. There were exceptions to the general rule and this photo taken towards the close of the 19th century shows Jack at Bog-eggs who was reputed to be the last handloom weaver in Wadsworth."
