L&YR Postcard - Hardcastle Crags, Hebden Bridge. - WMH00518
Dam, Hardcastle Crags, Hebden Bridge, Hebden Water, Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, Landscape, Mill pond, River, Weir, Woods, drive
Postcard date stamped September 1910. First in a series published by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway using this photo promoting cheap fares to Hebden Bridge for trips to its surrounding beauty spots. The promotional message on the reverse reads:
“Hardcastle Crags, and the beautiful country in the immediate vicinity, are easily reached from Hebden Bridge Station (Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway).
Whilst the card is postmarked 1910 the photo is from some years earlier as it pre-dates construction of ‘The Chalet’ tearoom, which was to the right of the weir, and was there by at least 1904. On the right is the overflow from Gibson Mill pond and left above the weir is the retaining wall of the Upper or Lord Holme Dam.

The Hebden Valley - WMH00183
Hardcastle Crags, Hebden Valley, Mill pond
Undated postcard. The road up the Crags from Midgehole climbs along on the right and in the centre is the dam (no public access), near Hawden Hole, which served New Bridge Mill at Midgehole. Above the dam and in a clearing is Thornton’s Tea Rooms/Cosy Corner Cafe (now site of Hebden Hey Scout Hostel) and just visible to its right are Gibson Wood Cottages, now demolished.

Hebden Valley, Hebden Bridge - WMH00158
Hebden Valley, Lee Mill, Mill pond
Undated postcard. Looking down the valley towards Hebden Bridge with Lee Mill and the mill dam, to its left is Lee Mill Road and left of that Midgehole Road. Heptonstall Church is on the skyline. Lee Mill was a former cotton mill and was demolished in the 1970s and the dam subsequently filled in and the area is now housing.
Phil Parker recalls: “My father was a loom overlooker at Lee Mill in the 1940s and 50s. Tragically he found two young boys who had drowned in the dam. They lived in the cottages on Lee Mill Road where my father lived as a boy. We used to play there as youngsters around the dam, through a tunnel and have picnics in the field by the dam. My grandma lived in the cottages until she passed away in the 1950s.”

Gibson Mill, Hardcastle Crags c.1910. - RDA00108
Building, Gibson Mill, Hebden Bridge, Hebden Water, Mill, Mill Chimneys, Mill pond, Mills, River, Tea Room
Gibson Mill, or Lord Holme Mill, at the heart of the Crags. Originally a water powered Cotton mill, subsequently supplemented by steam. By the 1890s it had become an 'entertainment emporium' providing for the vast number of visitors to the Crags with a Restaurant, Tea Rooms, Dancing Rooms and refreshment kiosks. Having lain empty for many years it is now operated by the National Trust, is self-sufficient in energy, water and waste, and once again open to the public.

Jowler Mill, Luddenden Foot - HPC00355
Buildings, Holme House Mill, Luddenden Foot, Mill, Mill pond, Mills, jowler Mill
NAME: JOWLER or HOLME HOUSE MILL
LOCATION: Jowler
REF: LD 5
GRID REF: 040 280
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Empty
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A three storey stone built mill with a number of small extensions. The mill was first built c1818, but was seriously damaged by fire in 1867. Rebuilt in its present form. There is a picturesque dam just upstream and a good example of ‘double decker’ housing along the road above.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Empty at present, although it seems to have recently been used for craft workshops. The building appears to be in good condition and may have some potential for similar re-use.

Thrum Hall Mill - HPC00254
Mill pond, Ryburn Valley, Thrum Hall Mill
NAME: THRUM HALL MILL
LOCATION: Beestonhirst
REF: RY 11
GRID REF: 017 192
CLASSIFICATION: A
CONDITION: Disappeared
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This site can be found on the southerly facing valley side of the Upper Ryburn, close to the main A58 road. It took its name from nearby Thrum Hall and was latterly known as Beeston Hall or Beestonhirst Mills together with Hanging Lee Mill (see RY12). It dates form the early 19C and was a small cotton spinning concern. It burned down in 1924. However a small, two storey stone building adjoining a cottage just below the dam was possibly connected with the mill. The dam is still full and in good condition.

Stansfield Mill, Triangle - HPC00132
Buildings, Chimney, Chimneys, Mill, Mill pond, Mills, Places, Stansfield Mill, Triangle
NAME: STANSFIELD MILL
LOCATION: Stansfield Bridge, Triangle
REF: RY 31
GRID REF: 044 222
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Semi used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid to late 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This mill is situated in a picturesque setting on the Ryburn below the small settlement of Triangle. The main part consists of a four storey stone built building with a small tower (date stone 1897), adjoining an engine shed, a warehouse and a large stone chimney. Also derelict remains of an earlier building at the eastern end of the site. Adjacent weaving shed. The large dam is still filled. Like most of the sites in the lower part of the valley this was a woollen mill.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The main mill building is semi used by a couple of small textile firms and the weaving shed is occupied by an engineering company. The dam is used for angling. Generally, the mill is in good condition and hopefully will continue to have some future.

Wildspur Mill - HPC00127

NAME: WILDSPUR MILL
LOCATION: Near New Mill
REF: HU 34. HPC00319
GRID REF: 162 082
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Semi used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid 19C (site earlier?)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Just downstream from Valley Mills there was probably an earlier water-powered mill here. The present buildings date from the 1850’s – two large, four storey stone buildings of slightly different design, the lower being double gabled and probably slightly later in date. Tall, octagonal stone chimney still used. Small weaving shed and larger building that was probably built for the dyeing and finishing processes which were introduced here in the late 19C. Large dam still in good condition, and cottages on main road above.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is used by a firm of cotton dyers, although not all the buildings appear to be completely in use. Buildings look in good condition and, with their attractive setting in this wooded valley, could be designated as a Listed Building.

Holmbridge Mill – HPC00107
Holmbridge, Holmbridge Mill, Huddersfield, Mill, Mill pond, Places
NAME: HOLMBRIDGE MILL
LOCATION: Holmbridge
REF: HU 3
GRID REF: 121 067
CLASSIFICATION: B and D
CONDITION: Semi used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early–mid 19C/early 20C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A good example of an early to mid 19C mill building here, and now the only surviving one in the Holmbridge district. A three storey (plus attic) stone building with a circular staircase tower and mill pond and race immediately behind. Some later additions at the front – now partly derelict. Across the road there is a small weaving shed, a large two and three storey stone building (date stone 1936) and offices etc. Other parts demolished. This part of the site was probably separately owned at some time and appears to have been called Clarence Mill. Going back much earlier though, there was a fulling mill in this vicinity and woollen manufacture was recorded here in 1800.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: Only the ground floor of the old mill seems to be used - by a joiner. The weaving shed/later buildings across the road are partly used by a textile company and as a craft workshop. Space to let when visited. The older building could be considered for listing – it remains mostly unaltered and is in danger of deterioration.

NAME: BOTTOMS MILL
LOCATION: Burnlee
REF: HU 8
GRID REF: 132 075
CLASSIFICATION: C
CONDITION: Fully used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid 19C/20C (site earlier)
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A large industrial site in the valley bottom, consisting mainly of extensive, modern low-level buildings. However, parts of the older mill here survive – notably a three storey, double gabled stone building (mid 19C) close to the large dam. Later additions around this building, including a small engine house and a tall, circular brick chimney (date stone 1911). Also weaving sheds. A water-powered mill seems likely to have been in existence on this site by the 1820’s, but little or no evidence remains.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The site is now fully used by a large dyeing and finishing company, the interior of the old building having been converted and modernised for this purpose. The dam is also used for angling.

Gibson Mill and Dam, c1950 - HLS00423
Buildings, Chimney, Chimneys, Feature, Forest, Gibson Mill, Landscape, Mill, Mill Lodge, Mill pond, Mills, Woodland, Woodlands, Woods
Built around 1800 by Abraham Gibson, this was one of the earliest mills in the area and was water powered producing cotton cloth, until it ceased production in 1890.
In the early part of the 20th century it was an entertainment centre for visitors and local people, including boating on the mill dam. The deeds for the woodlands at Hardcastle Crags were handed over to the National Trust at a ceremony on Saturday 19th May 1951.
Following a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Gibson Mill was completely re-furbished and reopened to the public in 2005.
