Stoodley Pike, Todmorden - RDA00139
Subject

Building, Monument, Places, Stoodley Pike, Todmorden
Description
An account of the resource
Stoodley Pike refers to a 1400 feet (400m) hill, although it is better known for its 121feet (37m) monument which was designed by local architect James Green and completed in 1856 at the end of the Crimean War.
The monument replaced an earlier structure completed in 1815 to commemorate the defeat of Napoleon. It collapsed in 1854 after a lightning strike, as a result of which a lightning conductor was added which has proved to be successful. It was paid for by public subscription, the shortfall being covered by the Fielden family. It is believed that the inscription below was cut by Mr Luke Fielden and that Mr John Fielden himself wrote the words.
The weathered inscription reads:
STOODLEY PIKE. A PEACE MONUMENT ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION. COMMENCED IN 1814 TO COMMEMORATE THE SURRENDER OF PARIS TO THE ALLIES AND FINISHED AFTER THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO WHEN PEACE WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1815.
BY A STRANGE COINCIDENCE THE PIKE FELL ON THE DAY THE RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR LEFT LONDON BEFORE THE DECLARATION OF WAR WITH RUSSIA IN 1854. IT WAS REBUILT WHEN PEACE WAS RESTORED IN 1856. RESTORED AND LIGHTNING CONDUCTOR FIXED 1889.

An account of the resource
Mr Lloyd Greenwood (d. 2005 aged 80) was affectionately known as "Mr Hebden Bridge” on account of his knowledge of the area, its history, its people and events. Born in Hebden Bridge he attended Stubbings School and the former Central Street Middle School. A railway worker for 44 years he was called up in 1943 and was involved with hospital trains and troop movements. He was later shipped off to Burma to help restore the shattered transport system. He was well known for his talks and slide shows to local organisations throughout Calderdale. He was a trustee of the Alice Longstaff Gallery Collection and together with Frank Woolrych, helped stage many popular exhibitions of photographs in the Hebden Bridge Tourist Information Office.

Hebden Bridge Local History Society
Description
An account of the resource
The Hebden Bridge Local History Society was formed in 1949 and is a section of the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society which celebrated its hundredth anniversary in 2005.
The Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.
The Society's archive and library is housed at The Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month.
Donations to the archive are welcomed. Contributions of photos and documents, even from the recent past.
A catalogue of the Society's is available on their website..
One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.
Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.

Description
An account of the resource
This eye-catching monument on the Pennine Way stands 1,310 feet above sea level and some 120 feet high on the crest of a windswept hill. It was erected to commemorate the surrender of Paris to the Allied Armies in March 1814: during the Napoleonic Wars the export of cloth was greatly hampered and there was also a genuine fear of a French invasion. Paid for by public subscription, it was completed in 1815, the year of Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo. It collapsed in 1854 (a fact linked by the superstitious with the outbreak of the Crimean War) and was rebuilt by a local architect, James Green, as an obelisk on a square base.
