Historic Homes of Yorkshire collection
Description
An account of the resource
This Album contains images with notes on the Historic Homes of Yorkshire, a series of lectures first given to the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society by Mr. George Hepworth around 1916. An architect by profession, in 1894 he was a founder member of the Brighouse Photographic Society, and became a much sort after photographic artist and lanternist (someone who operates a magic lantern). He achieved wide popularity with his book 'Brighouse, its Scenery and Antiquities'; as only a 100 copies were published it has become something of a collectors item. The lectures take the form of a guided tour of the properties, and the language of the original notes has been maintained.

See Exhibit

Description
An account of the resource
Slide 6 - Entering the house by the door in the west wing we are shown into the Entrance Hall, or Gallery, which was added, as stated, the 18th century by Vanbrugh.
It conforms in all its details to the severely classic style prevailing at that period, when so many mansions were built in this style in different parts of England, notably Castle Howard, which was designed by the same architect.

One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.
Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.

Description
An account of the resource
The church, dedicated to St Thomas a Beckett, first dates from the mid-13th century but was re-constructed and enlarged on several occasions over subsequent centuries. By the mid-19th century it was structurally in poor condition and then was badly damaged by a severe gale in 1847. Instead of repairing it was decided to replace with a new building in the same churchyard and this church, dedicated to St Thomas the Apostle, opened in 1854. The old church was largely demolished but today its ruins are preserved.
