Description
An account of the resource
Wortley Station between Penistone and Deepcar on the Sheffield – Manchester Woodhead line opened with the line in 1845. Seen here with a sizeable staff for a small station.
The station was close to Wortley Hall seat of the Earl of Wharncliffe, a keen proponent of railway development, and there was a private waiting room for his and his family’s use.
The station closed in 1955 and train services on the line ceased in 1981 and the rails were subsequently lifted.

Description
An account of the resource
The first station at Penistone on the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway’s (later Great Central) Sheffield – Manchester Woodhead line opened in 1845. When the L&YR line from Huddersfield to Penistone opened in 1850 it joined the Woodhead line at a junction east of the station with the result that L&YR trains had to reverse into the station. This persisted until 1874 when a new joint station was built with GCR and L&YR having their own platforms.
Penistone was also the terminus for trains from Doncaster via Barnsley connecting to the Woodhead line.
The GCR platforms closed in 1970 together with the Woodhead line to passenger and the line closed fully in 1981 and the tracks were subsequently lifted. The two remaining platforms for the Huddersfield – Sheffield line now sport just simple shelters for passengers.
The end of the GCR platforms are seen here in this image with GCR locos and carriages and in the background the Yorkshire Iron & Steel Works.
Any further details on the image will be gratefully received.

Serving the villages of Shepley and Shelley it opened, like other intermediate stations, with the line in 1850. Only one platform is seen here as its staggered platforms were separated by a road overbridge to the right of the photo. The station survived the Beeching cuts of the 1960s but was de-staffed in 1966 and the buildings subsequently demolished. In 1989 the line was largely reduced to single track but remains double track through the station here. It has been renamed ‘Shelley’.

Description
An account of the resource
A lifelong resident of Todmorden, Thomas has always had a strong interest in the history of Todmorden and the surrounding area, as can be seen in this collection. His interest in photography started over 50 years ago; he became a member of Todmorden Camera Club, joining in 1971. He worked for the Todmorden Co-op from 1950 to 1971, then for Todmorden Borough Council, until local government changes in 1974, when he joined the West Yorkshire County Council until that was abolished in 1986. Finally, from 1986 until his retirement he worked for Calderdale MBC.

Description
An account of the resource
This Post Card, one in the Valentine's Series, is quite a well known photo. In the 1950's local teenagers would gather to swim in the Green Lady pool which formed around the remains of the stone foundations used to support the structure (which was long gone in the 1950's). The myth of the Green Lady needs further research.

An account of the resource
Mr Lloyd Greenwood (d. 2005 aged 80) was affectionately known as "Mr Hebden Bridge” on account of his knowledge of the area, its history, its people and events. Born in Hebden Bridge he attended Stubbings School and the former Central Street Middle School. A railway worker for 44 years he was called up in 1943 and was involved with hospital trains and troop movements. He was later shipped off to Burma to help restore the shattered transport system. He was well known for his talks and slide shows to local organisations throughout Calderdale. He was a trustee of the Alice Longstaff Gallery Collection and together with Frank Woolrych, helped stage many popular exhibitions of photographs in the Hebden Bridge Tourist Information Office.

Hebden Bridge Camera Club - The Changing Face of Hebden Bridge
Subject
The topic of the resource
The Changing Face of Hebden Bridge and its Environs.
This photographic project, supported financially by Hebden Royd Town Council, provides us with an invaluable record, looking as it does at the changing face of Hebden Bridge and the surrounding district, over the last fifty years or so.
Until March 2014 this collection of photographic prints was housed in the Hebden Bridge Library.
We are indebted to the members of the Hebden Bridge Camera Club for all their efforts in the past, now, and in the future.
Description
An account of the resource
The Camera Club was formed in the summer of 1952 from a special interest section of the Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society. Initially the new club was called the Calder Camera Club but following a certain amount of confusion regarding its location, after a couple of years, the name was changed to Hebden Bridge Camera Club. Originally the Club met over Horner’s Barber’s shop on Market Street and subsequently in a room over the Council Offices. We now meet at the Masonic Hall, Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge.
The Club is a member of the Yorkshire Photographic Union (YPU) and through this is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. This allows us to participate in competitions, exhibitions and various seminars, both at County and National levels. In this context the Club hosted the YPU’s annual “Assembly and Exhibition” in 1973 and again in 1982.
From September to April the Club meets weekly, the principal activities being a bi-monthly print and projected images competition and lectures on photography-related subjects. We also take part in occasional inter-club competitions. During the summer we meet once per fortnight and these meetings usually takes the form of a walk around places of local interest. The Club also holds an annual print exhibition which is gaining in popularity each year.
With the advent of digital imaging and the ease with which high quality prints can now be produced, there has been a resurgence in amateur photography and this has been reflected the growing interest in the Club’s activities and in new membership. However, we are still a relatively small club and new members are always welcome. So if you’re a novice wishing to improve your technique, or an experienced photographer prepared to test your ability in competition, why not come along and sample a few meetings – expect a friendly welcome.
