Description
An account of the resource
William Henwood is a retired local authority manager. He lives in Staffordshire but has known and loved Upper Calderdale since the 1970s and is a regular visitor. Encouraged by a friend in Halifax who was volunteering with the National Trust, he started collecting old postcards and photographs of Hardcastle Crags and the surrounding area in the 1990s, and is still doing so.

Description
An account of the resource
Postcard with April 1949 postmark. Hawden Hole is situate on the south Hebden Dale hillside on today’s Lee Wood Road between Midgehole and Hebden Hey and above the lower part of Hardcastle Crags. It was the site of the locally infamous murder of Samuel Sutcliffe in February 1817. After the First World War it was turned into Hawden Hall Holiday Camp and Tea Rooms by William Holt. The old whitewashed farmhouse has now been demolished and the former barn behind it, already converted into a house by the time of this photo enlarged, and gentrified and now known as Hawdon Hall.
The card is rather confusingly labelled as this is not the usual path, or The Drive, to Hardcastle Crags from the gates at Midgehole and the walkers, in scout uniforms, are in any event going in the wrong direction! They are coming down from the camp site at Hebden Hey from where a path does run down to stepping stones to cross to the riverside path in Hardcastle Crags.

Scrapbook of a Mayoral year
Description
An account of the resource
This album is a record of the mayoral year of office of Christopher O’Brien who was honoured to fill that office from 1985 to 1986 for Hebden Royd Urban District Council.
Christopher served as a local councillor for 20 years from 1969. He was a governor of both Stubbings and Riverside schools, as well as serving on the committees of various charities and the European group. He worked hard with other councillors to put Hebden Bridge on the map and pushed hard for a marina and swimming pool for the town. He persuaded a small group of people to help him as he rolled up his sleeves to decorate the Trades Club, turning it from an unused, dusty building into a useful amenity.
Christopher was born in 1924 in the small town of Ballinrobe, County Mayo in the West of Ireland. He was the eldest of five children. When he was just a few years old, the family moved to Mullingar where their father, John Lewis was an engine driver.
Christopher went to Mullingar Technical College to study engineering, before joining the Irish Railways working first in Galway, later as an acting fireman in Athlone and then as a steam-raiser in Mullingar.
The direction of his life changed in 1943 when he went to Belfast and joined the RAF. He always joked that he had intended to join the army, but the office was closed for lunch, so he signed for the RAF instead. Whilst there he represented the RAF at boxing at the Army, Navy and Air Force Tournament, as well as being selected for the bomber command football team. From his basic training at Lonkesh, there were a number of moves which eventually took him to Marham in Norfolk, where he met Hebden Bridge born Sheila Nutter.
As soon as they were demobilised in 1947 they were married at St Thomas’s Church here in Hebden Bridge and afterwards headed for Glasgow where Christopher had been offered an apprenticeship at the North British Locomotive Company. Here he designed engines, some destined for the South African Railway. Whilst in Glasgow their first daughter was born and the family stayed there until 1951 when he qualified as a draughtsman. The family then returned to Hebden Bridge where their second daughter was born.
Over the years Christopher worked for a great many companies, as a draughtsman in his early career and with experience, becoming plant manager. He worked on a wide variety of engines, valves and machines, working for diverse and well known companies such as ICI and Waddington games, and working on some really interesting projects such as the wheel system that turns the huge telescope at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire. During his time in engineering he was appalled at the number of accidents and deaths which he saw in the workplace, so became active in the union to try to encourage management to make machines safer. This did not always endear him to company leaders but he pushed on regardless, caring more about people, than his own popularity.
Christopher loved to be with people. He loved a laugh and a joke. Whether it was with family or people he met in the street, he would stop for a chat and bring a smile to your face. Being a local councillor and being involved in the community was very important to Christopher and this record shows the many events he supported during his time as mayor, which he was really honoured to do.
Christopher and Sheila celebrated their Diamond wedding in 2007 and Christopher celebrated his 90th birthday in 2014, passing away in the summer of that year. He would be delighted if this record brought memories, conversations and smiles to the people of Hebden Bridge.

Description
An account of the resource
Alice Longstaff (née Speak) (d. 1992 aged 85) was a remarkable lady. Born at Little Lear Ings farm in Heptonstall on May 16 1907, she started work at 14 years old, in September 1921, as apprentice photographer at the Westerman Studio, 25 West End, Hebden Bridge. Crossley Westerman had established the studio in 1890; on his death in 1918 his daughter Ada took over the business, and it was Ada who trained the young apprentice. Alice remained there for the next 70 years. In 1935 she and her family bought the business, and her brother Clement became the framer and darkroom technician, until he died in 1963. In 1935 Alice married John Longstaff who joined the business as picture framer when Clement died, and they continued to work together until her death in 1992.
0ne of the most frequently-asked questions about the Longstaff Collection is why was it named after Alice, when so many of the photographs in the archive are credited to her predecessor Crossley Westerman?
Alice's Album - The Story of a Hebden Bridge Photographer's Studio, has the answer and much more! Copies are still available from local bookshops and online from Hebweb. This 68-page high quality soft-back lavishly illustrated with photographs in colour, sepia and black and white, it tells the story not only of Alice but of Crossley Westerman and his daughter, Ada, too, without whom there would be no collection.
Founder of the studio in the early 1890s, Crossley Westerman could have had little inkling of the amazing retailing tradition he had set in motion, ending only with the death, 100 years later, of Alice Longstaff who took over in 1935.
It's amazing enough for a business to survive for around a century but for it to be in the hands of only three proprietors makes for a fascinating story which "Alice's Album" tells from beginning to end.

An account of the resource
The Hebden Bridge Local History Society was formed in 1949 and is a section of the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society which celebrated its hundredth anniversary in 2005.
The Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.
The Society's archive and library is housed at The Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month.
Donations to the archive are welcomed. Contributions of photos and documents, even from the recent past.
A catalogue of the Society's is available on their website..
One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.
Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.

Hebden Bridge Camera Club - The Changing Face of Hebden Bridge
Subject
The topic of the resource
The Changing Face of Hebden Bridge and its Environs.
This photographic project, supported financially by Hebden Royd Town Council, provides us with an invaluable record, looking as it does at the changing face of Hebden Bridge and the surrounding district, over the last fifty years or so.
Until March 2014 this collection of photographic prints was housed in the Hebden Bridge Library.
We are indebted to the members of the Hebden Bridge Camera Club for all their efforts in the past, now, and in the future.
Description
An account of the resource
The Camera Club was formed in the summer of 1952 from a special interest section of the Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society. Initially the new club was called the Calder Camera Club but following a certain amount of confusion regarding its location, after a couple of years, the name was changed to Hebden Bridge Camera Club. Originally the Club met over Horner’s Barber’s shop on Market Street and subsequently in a room over the Council Offices. We now meet at the Masonic Hall, Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge.
The Club is a member of the Yorkshire Photographic Union (YPU) and through this is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. This allows us to participate in competitions, exhibitions and various seminars, both at County and National levels. In this context the Club hosted the YPU’s annual “Assembly and Exhibition” in 1973 and again in 1982.
From September to April the Club meets weekly, the principal activities being a bi-monthly print and projected images competition and lectures on photography-related subjects. We also take part in occasional inter-club competitions. During the summer we meet once per fortnight and these meetings usually takes the form of a walk around places of local interest. The Club also holds an annual print exhibition which is gaining in popularity each year.
With the advent of digital imaging and the ease with which high quality prints can now be produced, there has been a resurgence in amateur photography and this has been reflected the growing interest in the Club’s activities and in new membership. However, we are still a relatively small club and new members are always welcome. So if you’re a novice wishing to improve your technique, or an experienced photographer prepared to test your ability in competition, why not come along and sample a few meetings – expect a friendly welcome.
